I keep getting this advice. I have to start at CUNY first and then try for a job at NYU/Columbia. Why is that?

Thanks.

Why do you specifically want to work at these schools?

Top-tier schools, good locations (Greenwich Village and Upper West Side) and I can get tuition benefits.

Ahh that makes sense. Do you reckon NYU/Columbia prefers university work experience in NYC only (ie. CUNY) or can it be from anywhere in the country (ie. University of San Francisco, Maryland, etc)?

You want to go to graduate school there while working?

This is true. Conversely, the more books you read, the more you may impress or have the hands you shake like you.

Here is my advice: Apply for the job. Wait for the outcome. You are welcome.

100% spot on. My hidden intention is to go to grad school, while working at either of the universities. Reduced or free tuition is quite appealing to me.

I was actually admitted to a program at Columbia GSAPP for fall 2017, but could not attend for financial reasons. I would have had to take on a student loan of $75,000+. I'm currently debt free and prefer to keep it that way.

I come from a middle-class family and I can't take the risk of student loan debt. Working at NYU/Columbia and doing night time grad school is my best option

I've been applying on both career sites since September 2017. Networked online and in-person. No interviews :(

First time on the job market: I sent resumes over 200 positions. Across the whole country. Heck even some Canada. Took me 6 months to land a job. This is after completing a frigging PhD.

You are applying jobs with a bachelor's degree to a select few places and didn't get a call back for several months? Please. Cry me a river.

You got this reverse. These university positions are for friends and relatives. If you want to work for Columbia, you need to go get your degree there. Work odd administrative jobs that pay minimum hourly wage while studying. Then you apply for a job there and see whether you get lucky.

Is this friends/relatives job network just at Columbia and the Ivies? or does it apply to NYU as well? I'm not from NYC, but NYU seems less exclusive than Columbia. Both are elitist though.

On LinkedIn and meeting people, I've met people who work at NYU from non-NYU schools (St. John's University, Fordham, Parsons School of Design, etc). I see random people from places like Pittsburgh and South Carolina working for NYU -- not sure if they have a friend or relative who got them in the door for a job at the university

Lol I think I will have to save up a lot of money and then go to grad school at 40 or 45 years old -- to avoid student loan debt

NYU and Columbia University are very, very scrutinizing institutions. They'll give you all the money but if you're late ONCE, if you can't meet their demands...you're gone. Simple as that. They are non-union, private institutions that mostly hire from within.

Again, they want a Specific type: No social life, able to take a lot of abuse, and most importantly can smile and make it look like you're not hurting.

The beauty of NYU is the fact, as an employee you can send your kids for free. I don't know if it's still completely free but that was true up until the mid 2000 when my friend worked as a physical therapist at NYU hospital.
