31. Lyoto "The Dragon" Machida (26)

Image

One of the most feared strikers in MMA history, Machida blitzed to the UFC LHW title. He fought most of his career as an undersized LHW before dropping to MW late in his career.

28. Eddie "The Underground King" Alvarez (52)

The Underground King has finally hit the mainstream. The only fighter to hold both UFC and Bellator titles, Alvarez has long been one of the top LWs in MMA.

Couldn't you have found a less cross-eyed pic of Rampage. How dare you.

What is the circumstance surrounding Barnett's win over Randy / his positive steroid test that got him stripped of the title? If that same scenario happened today, would that have been ruled a NC a la DC/Jones? JW because I know Royce also has a win over Saku that he popped for that is still called a win so I'm not sure if they sued to handle it differently or if the circumstances were different or what?

Just asking because we are getting to the point where only guys who were clearly at the very top of their divisions for a time live on this list. Barnett is an OG but honestly I think he's probably too high. That said, guessing your justification is that he was UFC HW champion. If that accolade were removed from this list (which I'm guessing it would be if ACs were consistent) then he probably drops.

Like the notion that Overeem is barely on this list while Barnett is top 30 doesn't sit super well with me. Guessing your justification is Barnett's HW title which he probably shouldn't even have TBH due to popping immediately after the fight. Both are OGs who fought everyone, both are MMA HOFers/Legends. Both have an insane amount of wins. Obviously Overeem's losses have started piling up but then again I'm guessing Barnett's would be to if he wasn't inactive for YEARS due to his 73rd failed drug test.

I guess another thing that may separate them a little is that some of Overeem's success came in K-1 which doesn't shoot him up any MMA list, but still grows his legend in the eyes of combat sports fans as a whole.

I'm not taking stance on what should and should not constitute as a win or a NC. Only going by what the results were, right or wrong. I also don't take K-1 into account, like you said, so Overeem as an overall martial artist is definitely greater than just his MMA accomplishments.

I will say Barnett is more than just a one time UFC HW champ. He also was a King of Pancrase and a tournament finalist in both Pride and Strikeforce. He holds wins over Arlovski, Mir, Rizzo, Big Nog, Mark Hunt, Yuki Kondo, Randy Couture, Dan Severn, and Semmy Schilt. Yes, his UFC title helps bump him, but even without that, he'd likely be a bit ahead of Overeem.

Former UFC LW champ, current FW contender, and probably should have been fighting (and dominating) at BW this whole time.

I asked what the circumstances were, not telling you that you should alter your list based on your judgment about whether it should have been a win or a NC.

Not arguing Overeem should be above Barnett at all, just not sure there should be a 70 spot difference. Honestly though Overeem's resume is just as impressive (Strikeforce/Dream HW champion). Wins over Werdumx2, Vitor, Vovchanchyn, Kharitonov, Hunt, Lesnar, Mir, Nelso, JDS, Arlovski.

His losses are definitely worse.

What is the argument for Barnett over Werdum?

Werdum UFC HW champion (not stripped) with wins over Fedor, Cain, Nog, Overeem, Hunt, Bigfoot, etc.

He beat Couture, then he popped and they stripped him. It definitely would have been a NC in today's rules.

They were really close. Right next to each other as far as HWs on the list go. Felt like Barnett's resume was a tiny bit better with his longevity and pile of quality wins. Werdum does have some monster wins at the top of his resume though. I will say that I think in a year or two when I do another version of this list, Werdum will have almost certainly pulled away from Barnett into the top 20 or so.

Okay so if you were doing a top HW of all time list, Barnett would be above Werdum?

Honestly I can't imagine anyone would agree with that. There is an argument for Werdum as GOAT HW. Nobody has Barnett in that conversation.

I would put Barnett slightly over Werdum, but it's very close. You may not love the rest of this list if you think Werdum is among the HW GOATs, because there are still a handful of HWs to come on this list.

Werdum has finished every single member on your HW GOAT list except for Stipe.
