OT: Stephen W. Hawking, physicist, dead at 76

Post#1 » by HarthorneWingo » Wed Mar 14, 2018 4:16 am

We lost one of our greatest minds. RIP Dr. Hawking.

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/03/14/obituaries/stephen-hawking-dead.html?action=Click&contentCollection=BreakingNews&contentID=66664795&pgtype=Homepage

Stephen W. Hawking, the Cambridge University physicist and best-selling author who roamed the cosmos from a wheelchair, pondering the nature of gravity and the origin of the universe and becoming an emblem of human determination and curiosity, has died at his home in Cambridge, England. He was 76.

A family spokesman announced the death in a statement to several news media outlets.

“Not since Albert Einstein has a scientist so captured the public imagination and endeared himself to tens of millions of people around the world,” Michio Kaku, a professor of theoretical physics at the City University of New York, said in an interview.

Dr. Hawking did that largely through his book “A Brief History of Time: From the Big Bang to Black Holes,” published in 1988. It has sold more than 10 million copies and inspired a documentary film by Errol Morris. The 2014 film about his life, “The Theory of Everything,” was nominated for several Academy Awards and Eddie Redmayne, who played Dr. Hawking, won the best-actor Oscar.

Scientifically, Dr. Hawking will be best remembered for a discovery so strange that it might be expressed in the form of a Zen koan: When is a black hole not black? When it explodes.

What is equally amazing is that he had a career at all. As a graduate student in 1963, he learned he had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a neuromuscular wasting disease also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. He was given only a few years to live.

The disease reduced his bodily control to the flexing of a finger and voluntary eye movements but left his mental faculties untouched.

He went on to become his generation’s leader in exploring gravity and the properties of black holes, the bottomless gravitational pits so deep and dense that not even light can escape them.

RIP. Modern day Einstein.

I remember reading his book A Brief History of Time. I've also read Hyperspace by Michio Kaku, who is quoted in the article. I've seen Michio Kaku and Neil DeGrasse Tyson in person, since they live here in NYC -- so it isn't impossible to catch them at some event or speech -- but I've never met Hawking. And now, there is no future chance to attend one of his lectures.

His mind and voice will be missed. He accomplished a lot, especially in light of his condition.

Wasted cause, wasted life!

He fought to convince himself for the rejection of the Truth, not to find Him nor to explain us His secrets!

Terrible, terrible news, wow this really ruined my day. What sad, is that I can already see some types who will cheer for his death. You know what people I am talking about.

He overcame obstacles that most of us wouldn't have been able to manage. He had a good run. RIP

Allah—there is no god except Him—is the Living One, the All-sustainer. Neither drowsiness befalls Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that may intercede with Him except with His permission? He knows what is before them and what is behind them, and they do not comprehend anything of His knowledge except what He wishes. His seat embraces the heavens and the earth and He is not wearied by their preservation, and He is the All-exalted, the All-supreme.

I never understood why people assume Aliens would be hostile. It's far more logical that they would be incredibly peaceful. Otherwise they more than likely would have destroyed themselves with the vast technology it takes to travel the universe safely.
