Re: Bucks Keep 2018 Pick
Kareem could have just headed down Interstate 10 from Westwood to Phx.
However......In 1988 in a 13 player draft the Bucks foolishly took Jeff Grayer and his bum knee who never had one healthy season with them at pick 13 allowing the Suns to get Thunder Dan Majerle one pick later. Your welcome Suns.
It was a big part of many bad decisions in the demise of the 80s teams who went to the playoffs every year and the streak ended after the 91 playoffs.

Eh, they misjudged and weren't in a position to move to asset shedding mode, so they lucked out IMO.
Now... Throw all of LED's money at Ujiri and this pick will be a key part of the rotation next year.

We're a bit confused on the Suns end of this 2nd round pick. For some reason (and I assume there was a reason) the Suns would have gained the Bucks 2nd rounder this year if Milwaukee had the 18 to 30, not 17 to 30 as one would expect.
A one pick gap, before a 2nd rounder would "kick in"? Curious
Edit: for the record. I'm in the "happy it didn't convey" Suns camp
Educated guess is that the deal was written so that if the Bucks 1st didn't convey this year, the Suns got "something" for their troubles, i.e. a 2nd round pick in addition to the future first.
However again because of this damn bizarre finish in the eastern conference and draft drawing it looks like the Suns lost a 2nd round pick. I'm absolutely stunned that no one on this board nor in our local media picked up on this during our pick discussions of the past week.

Well, it was the one spot gap for a 2nd round "cover" that has had us wondering since the trade was made. Made quite typical trading sense for a 2nd to go to the Suns should the pick not convey this year. Not getting that if the Bucks hit the 17 spot exactly...hmm?
My guess is Suns GM McDonough asked for 16-30 reverse protection for 2018 & '19. If 1st not conveyed this year, the Buck send 46-60 in this draft. Horst said- no, we will only give you 18-30 RP for the two years and then 48-60 if that protection kicks in...and he was firm.
McDonough REALLY didn't want the pick, even at 16...he's pretty much said that in recent days. But in November the Suns weren't exactly in a great negotiation position, as you know. Eventually McD backed off to asking for 17-30 / 47-60, but Horst wasn't quite ok meeting right exactly in the middle, so he got a little something, and that was keeping the 2nd round pick at 48-60. In essence giving the Bucks their #47 pick for keeping a pick they'd rather give up now. At the time the Suns had their own 2nd pick, the Grizz's (since moved) and the Raptors. Losing a possible forth 2nd round pick in order to get the RP down to 17...hardly a big price tag should it land there. And it did.
I'll bet these little quirks are here and there in other transaction details. You just don't notice them unless your team is involved.

Re: Bucks Keep 2018 Pick
Just noticed that the Bucks don't keep their 2nd round pick this year (going to the Nets, otherwise would have gone to the Suns) AND next year (going to either Sacramento or Philadelphia). Sigh. Because Vaughn was such a bad pick they had to include a 2nd. Frustrating to think how much better our roster and cap space and assets would be if we hadn't botched the last 3 or 4 drafts. Bad picks, really bad trades. I think if you looked back at the last 10 draft-pick-related moves they've made, 1 has been good (Brogdon), 1 has been ok (Sterling), 8 have been bad-to-terrible. Smh

If they want a 2nd round pick, they can buy one.

With the 17th pick in the 2018 draft the Milwaukee Bucks select DJ Wilson II. Horst sights continuity as key for the teams future progess

The pick next year sucks since it's a right to swap with Sacto pick from the LRMAM trade and we gave it up for Jason Kidd.

Can we trade the pick?
Wouldn’t hurt our chances for Kawhi or the like if we could.

No, but we can just pick someone for somebody.

They bought one and sold one. I seem to recall they made like $100,000 and still got the guy they wanted.
Edit: I checked and they got $2M for Thornwell and paid $1.9M for Brown.

We should trade the suns for return of the future protections of the pick.

I like Robert Williams quite a bit. Moves well, finishes above the rim, blocks shots.

Come on ... you are all better than that ...
Trade the pick down for multiple 2nds
After the playoffs I will be very active in the draft thread... Playoffs will determine Bucks direction ... If Bucks get chemistry problems and we have to trade one of Khris or Bled ... we could pack the pick (draft n trade) for a superstar ...
Whatever the scouting reports at #16 ... there are many ways to use this pick.

This is the Bucks we're talking about here.
Please enlighten me as to the last draft day trade that was tilted in our favor. Seriously. Was it Ray Allen?
