Build a big 3?
1st off there is an assumption here that LaVine re-signs at 15-18m/yr. We use him as a sign and trade in this scenario. Also we re-sign Nwaba for 3-4years at $15-20m
Trade #1:
Bulls get: Kawhi Leonard, Pau Gasol, (a couple of 2nd round picks)
Spurs get: Markkanen, #6 pick in this draft, Valentine, Lopez, Asik, Holiday (maybe the NO pick too, or a future 1st rounder?)
Yes that's a lot to give up, but we get one of the best players in the league in return. The Spurs for their trouble would demand a lot, and getting LM, the #6 pick, and Valentine would give them a soft reset while still being able to compete right away. Aldridge has been playing more of the 5 this year and slotting LM into the 4 next to him would be perfect going into the future. Lopez and Aldridge from their Portland days have shown they can be an effective frontcourt vs traditional opposing bigs. Certainly Lopez is an upgrade over Gasol in that regard. Valentine and his "do everything" playstyle seems like it would fit perfectly in with the Spurs. Beyond that, Holiday, Lopez, and Asik (combined with Danny Green and Rudy Gay on their end) are expiring contracts that take the place of their one bad contract in Gasol to give them loads of cap and roster flexibility going forward. It seems like a pretty good package for them to get for Leonard...
Trade #2:
Bulls get: Kemba Walker, Marvin Williams, Tyler Zeller, (maybe some 2nd round picks?)
Hornets get: Dunn, LaVine (sign and trade), Pau Gasol, Portis, (maybe the NO Pick)
We immediately turn around and move Gasol (from Spurs) along with our other young players for the premier PG available for trade. Kemba's value will be down because you only get him for 1 year guaranteed. Marvin Williams and Tyler Zeller are both average vets being paid above average money. Williams is respectable from 3pt land and can space the floor. Zeller is decent too, just not worth $14m/yr. But really they both make fine "vet roster fillers" to help push deeper into the playoffs. For their part, the Hornets get away from 2 bad contracts and get a large injection of youth to help their rebuild. They do have to take on 2 years of Gasol, but that offsets with the 3 years of Zeller we get back. Overall they are in a much better position here.
Move #3:
Sign Deandre Jordan or DeMarcus Cousins (preferably Jordan) for 4 years $100M.
That gives us this roster:
PG: Kemba / Payne / Grant
SG: Nwaba / Kilpatrick
SF: Kawhi / Zipster
PF: Williams / Zeller
C: Jordan / Felicio
Issues? That's ~$107.8m in contracts. The salary cap next year is projected at $108m. That bench is awful. But with those 2nd round picks we are getting we can either dump our backups on other teams and sign vet min ring chasers, or just draft players who hopefully are better and use them. Zip and Kilpatrick's contracts aren't guaranteed and they can be cut to gain $3.5m to use on someone else. Next season we would have to cut most of those bench players and stretch Felicio to resign Kemba, but the good news is that once Williams and Zeller begin falling off the books, we would be fine. Also we aren't giving up future assets to build this... only gutting the current team.
