This is a middle of the pack roster. One star who is a borderline superstar and under 23 yo. You have some decent contracts (Hardaway Jr, Lee, and O'Quinn. Rookie contracts in Frank, KP, and a number of guys. Cheap contracts like Beasley, Burke, and Williams. Terrible contracts like Noah and Thomas.
Cap shape- Good. They have 3 million in cap space with Jack and Beasley is FAs.
How can this middle of the pack roster upgrade into the best in the East. Here is how:
They have to remove the bad contracts while improving.
Add a superstar.
If KP is traded, it must be for a superstar or a similar prospect like Giannis, Embiid, or Towns.
This tends to be the case for a lot of teams. Why the hell is NY even thinking this is possible?
Coach Bud is an excellent coach with a system that has been proven to work. If everyone on this roster is healthy. This team is a 6th to 8th seed. He is also attractive to FA prospects.
The NY media market is extremely attractive. Not just for endorsements but it's also attractive for stupid hype. Especially for Basketball. This could be attractive to brand based athletes.
So with that said, LeBron would have lurkwarm interest in NY as they stand if everyone is healthy. Maybe more than Cleveland and Philly but less than Houston and LAL.
How do they get the superstar and how is Bud a difference maker then?
For Kawhi Leonard.
Kawhi circle wants him with the Lakers or the Knicks. They want him in a major media market but the Spurs dont have interest in getting anything less than a young star for Leonard. Guess what the Knicks have. You got it, a young star. Now most NBA teams will never trade their young star for Leonard. Why would the Knicks? Are they stupid? Partly, they are. But it's also could be them not believing in the upcoming draft classes and maybe the Knicks having questions on KPs long term health even if they are agree KP is a special talent and a superstar potential player.
The trade for Leonard has to be strong but beneficial to the Knicks as one poor player move would kill the Knicks flexibility to get a max player.
Trade 1: Knicks get Ron Baker to opt in which he was going to do anyway, Courtney Lee, and KP to SAS for Kawhi Leonard to NYK.
This clears 1.8 million from the Knicks giving them. Gives them 4.8 million.
The other big move is another easy move that's highly likely. O'Quinn which says he will opt out, leaves NY for a contender like GS. This clears up critical cap space. This would give NY 8.8 million in cap space. O'Quinn also has to opt out or be traded for cap space but word is O'Quinn is opting out anyway.
The Knicks have to clear major space to get around 35.5 million needed for LeBron James.
They have two terrible contracts and still lack the depth at the center position now that O'Quinn is leaving and Noah wants out of NY. How can do solve and who can give NY what they want and take bad deals.
This is where my Hawks arrive. Hawks wants bad contracts and they want top 10 picks.
Hawks trade: Gets Dedmon to opt in, 33rd pick for Mudiay, Noah, Lance Thomas and the 9th pick.
This clears 22.2 million for the Knicks. Gives them 31 million in cap space and they have 4 minimum roster spots to fill.
They are are still short 4.5 mil for LeBron while needing 7.5 million in total cap space.
This is critical. They must get Enes Kanter to opt out and get him to start his contract around the 11 million dollar range. This is the only way LeBron is possible and this gives the Knicks minimum cap space for roster spots and a max contract spot for a player with 10+ years in the NBA.

The Knicks will have two 2nd rounders as well as 3 open slots with the MMLE. The Knicks lineup will be:
Frank/Burke/Jack
Cheap good vet FA/Hardaway Jr/Dotson

LeBron/cheap fa vet/Beasley
Dedmon/Kanter/2nd rounder
Gives the Knicks a great bench, great starting five, a lot of shooting, two elite two way forwards in James and Kawhi and great defense in the starting five. Add coach Bud system and this is the best team in the East and best team in the NBA.

Ew. Knicks should want nothing to do with Whiteside. This also doesn’t really help them cap wise, either. I don’t think 2 million in savings is nearly enough for Whiteside, and I think he’s MASSIVELY overrated by many.
