If he's available for long term salary like Hardaway and Lee, acquiring him is a good move. That's true even if he doesn't accept a buyout. We're going to be bad, still have a good draft pick, and clear a bunch of cap space at the end of next season. From a business standpoint, it's win win.
Who cares if he's starting or not? If he needs to be benched in order to develop a forward, force the issue like D'Antoni did Marbury. Being a contract year, one would have to assume he'd have to at least try to be on his best behavior.
