2018 Pre-Draft Workouts

Post#1 » by stitches » Sat May 12, 2018 6:28 pm

Well, here's the thread for the Jazz pre-draft workouts. Seems like they start today with the following group:

DiVincenzo is interesting... I liked Gabriel coming out of high school but he kind of stagnated. He's still intriguing with his ability to stretch the floor.

Do you recall how many guys the Jazz brought in last year for workouts? I don't recall at all when the Jazz brought O'Neale in for a look. Is my assumption correct that these early looks are pretty much about putting a summer league roster together?

The fact that workouts are already happening makes me happy. This is DL’s time to find some more hidden gems.

2 years ago they brought something insane like... 100+ players. I think last year they explicitly stated that they've decided to cut down and had about 70 if I'm not mistaken(still high number compared to other teams) so they can focus on quality rather than quantity. Those early ones are with players that have not yet decided whether to enter the draft or not(Gabriel, DiVincenzo) if I'm not mistaken. Some of them are draftable players(DiVincenzo for example), some are not...

About O'Neale - he participated in a vets camp with the Jazz, not pre-draft workout. he was 2 years removed from entering the draft and going undrafted when we signed him.

I think those are the prospects that have not yet decided if they will stay in the draft so they want early feedback from teams, so that's good to know that the Jazz are participating in that process even with the players who are on the fence and can potentially sway a prospect or two one way or the other...

I had a crazy dream we somehow traded into the top ten for Porter.

I’d love to get Huerter in for a workout before he makes a decision.

Chandler Hutchinson reportedly has a promise somewhere from 20-30. Hmmm......

Good size, how is his shooting? Heard it wasn't the greatest and don't most players agents leak that a player has a promise to drum up interest?

Also if he can't gain weight then he probably is Jeremy Evans 2.0, Diop is a better choice.

When I watch him I get similar vibe to what I got watching Kuzma... he just looks like a basketball player, there are small things about his game that scream NBA.

That is a truly awful comp. Chandler is just fine from a weight standpoint and is very skilled. Evans was super skinny and super athletic. Nothing similar about these guys.

Ya, I agree 100%... Hutch is absolutely nothing like Jeremy Evans. Not sure what else to say about that comp... at a loss for words tbh haha.

Here's Walt Perrin's interview for 1280:

https://soundcloud.com/user-517702939/the-big-show-utah-jazz-insider-report-walt-perrin-vp-of-player-personnel

-"we look for how players react to being in SLC, how they react to the other players and the coaches and even the ball boys. We want to make sure they can be acclimated to our culture... and that's besides the athletic stuff we are looking at"
-"we really love it when the players show something we never expected play-wise"
-most important things at combine - physicals, second most important - meetings, third - athletic testing
-"we need to get better shooting, Depending on what DL does in FA and if we lose someone(Favs?) we can use deeper bench".
-big surprises with personality in interviews(both positive and negative) don't happen a lot(about a couple every year), we usually have good feel and intel on the players before they come to the meeting
-on meetings about the prospects, DL would go around the room ask for opinions from everybody but not show his hand. He doesn't want to influence the opinions in the room.
-the draft is pretty deep... really deep in the top 8-10. And you can get some good players in the top 30... maybe even in the second round.
-meetings and conversations about moving up or down in the draft start after the combine, this includes who we are targeting and what's the cost/compensation
-our staff has gotten a pretty good reputation around the league and this makes scheduling workouts even with players out of our range much easier(Mitchell). It's still tough, but it has gotten a bit easier over the last several years. He also said that even when the agents of players projected to go much higher than we are at, refuse the workout the sentiment is much more in the realm of "we would really really love for him to come to the Jazz and if you had a pick this high we would have come for sure, but we have to allocate the time for teams that are more likely to be able to pick him"
-player that has impressed him most in a workout - Mitchell and Gobert from the last 5-6 years... He also said David Lee had a great workout and was going harder at the end of the practice than at the beginning and it was very impressive because of the altitude
