I'm not worried about his injury. I think he just milked it bc he wanted out of San Antonio.

So you guys are willing to trade the #12 or #13 pick for a potential rental?

I'd obv prefer he agree to an extension. But either way, yes I absolutely would. At the very least it gives us negotiating rights w him.King Ken wrote:So you guys are willing to trade the #12 or #13 pick for a potential rental?

If he wants to play in LA, are the Lakers signing George or LeBron and then saving their cap space for Kawhi next summer? They certainly can, but is that the plan?
Otherwise, I see no reason he wouldn't re-sign with the Clippers.
Plus, why would I want to go to the NBA? Duke players suck in the pros.

Kawhi did say he would sign in Los Angeles.
So I would do Tobias, #12, #13 for Kawhi, #18

Re: Kawhi Leonard?
If I had to choose, I'd personally rather use our assets to trade up for Doncic than to trade for a guy who quit on the best organization in sports.
If Kawhi's willing to treat the Spurs like this, why should we have any confidence that he won't just walk to the Lakers next year and leave us in a far worse position than we are now?
Unless Jerry somehow finds a way to get both, I'd rather have the future franchise player Doncic than Kawhi and his drama.

That's not the whole story. The spurs doctors misdiagnosed his injury and then Pop and his teammates publicly shaded him when he said he wasn't feeling right and wanted to get a 2nd option from a non team doctor.
Kawhi definitely could have handled it better (He seems like a major introvert though... maybe Asbergers?) but the Spurs no way have their hands clean in this situation.

It'll definitely take more than that to get him, they're not sending #18 back in any Kawhi trade. Probably ask we eat some bad salary too. Once the bidding war starts and guys like Ingram and Jaylen Brown are put on the table, it might not even be enough that we offer everything we have of value.
And that is my problem with trading for Kawhi, if you send the picks, Tobi, and probably something else (Bev?) you're left with Kawhi and a bunch of mediocre players. Once we win like 45 games and get ousted in the first round, with no pick cause we have to send it to Boston, the prospect of staying here becomes a lot less attractive for him.
I'd much rather keep piling young assets and if we have the chance to add someone next year in free agency, awesome, if not, keep growing and adding young talent. Patience usually pays off.

My opinion is we should focus on getting two players that will form a future best duo in NBA...
It's obviously a hyperbolic statement but I really wish we focus on those young players and not make a stupid move like RENTING a player who hasn't played for a whole season... If he assures us that he will sign an extension with us than I guess I'm okay with us getting Kawhi and 18 for Harris and both our picks (We could still get Troy Brown that way. A great young player to keep the future bright)
But I'd rather we didn't do anything with our picks now. Draft Sexton and Walker. Than try signing Rudy Gay who isn't expecting much more than he was getting last season but still we can make him happy.
Those two picks are a really great foundation for the future of this team and I think both Lawrence Frank and Jerry West are perfectly aware of this and won't do anything that's not gonna be a 100% GREAT deal.

Re: Kawhi Leonard?
i mean the thing is, if the headline is correct and kawhi's willing to sign here outright after his contract ends, then why even bother with this song and dance?
preserve your draft equity and go into the next season seeing if jerry west can lure him over. but don't risk it on a trade, esp when you might just get him anyway.

Re: Kawhi Leonard?
Team that trades for him could offer him more money than another team which tries to sign him in free agency next summer. So maybe there's a risk that he'll pursue every last dollar.

The misdiagnosis thing makes it even worse, because it's not like our medical staff is any better. Look at how poorly they handled Blake's injury a couple years ago. That just adds another level of risk to trading for Kawhi.

Re: Kawhi Leonard?
Another problem I just thought of with Kawhi: how are we supposed to build a real winner around him with no Tobias, no draft picks, and Gallo's contract still on the books? Then either Kawhi signs an extension and we're stuck in a worse version of the Lob City era (a treadmill team with no room to improve), or he walks in free agency and we're in an even worse position.
The more I think about it, the more it doesn't make sense. Trading up for Doncic is the far better move with our timeline and cap situation.

Don't think Boston will join any bidding war with him saying that he'll only resign in LA.

There is really no point to get him if there is no other moves to follow.(like LBJ?) I hope Jerry and Frank have some grand scheme of things we don't know yet.
2024-25 Clippers W/L Count against OKC, HOU, PHX, MIN (0-14)
2024-25 Clippers W/L Count against rest of NBA (43-18)

i mean you gotta start somewhere. either way i'm secretly (not so secretly?) hoping we don't go anywhere with this. i simply can't imagine this happens without us losing all three of harris/12/13. and we spend the next year freaking out that kawhi won't re-sign.

IMO, the only way a Kawhi trade makes sense is if LeBron's coming too and there's other moves lined up to enable that to happen.

Return to Los Angeles Clippers
