I guess we haven't discussed the possibility that we are preparing to let Kelley walk when he wants a raise, Brown could get a year of development in the G.

I literally just started watching tape on him, and I came to this board hoping to engage in a conversation about his style of play and how it fits with the pieces we have.
He might be able to contribute the first year. But again, who is he going to take minutes from? Does he play behind Porter/Oubre given his current skill set (lack of handles and still developing his shot). My guess is he doesn't play much his first year - so it will depend on how hard he works. Also, he isn't a "great" athlete - which is one of the things the Wizards really could have used. Solid but not great.
You’re right that his shot needs work but Brown doesn’t lack handles - actually that’s one of his biggest strengths . He was an ESPN 5-star point guard in HS before having a growth spurt
Handles/playmaking are consistently listed as strengths in Brown’s scouting report. I think he will contribute more of a ballhandling and passing role than Oubre or Porter:
Imo Brown Jr’s talent level is being underrated here. This kid was a McDonalds All-American and ESPN 5-star recruit in HS. Much like Oubre , he had an inconsistent freshman year that dropped his stock but he still has NBA tools. He’s 6’7 with a solid 6’10 wingspan & not a super explosive athlete but a very smooth one, similar to say a Khris Middleton.
I’ve also only heard good things about Brown’s intelligence and IQ. Regardless of how some may have felt about other prospects, I think there’s a good chance of Brown becoming a quality player and outperforming some players drafted ahead of him.

Kelly is a RFA. You slap the QO on him and see what the market bears.
Not many teams have cap space. Much different market than 2016 and 2017.

Why would they let him walk instead of trade him

Re: The Troy Brown Thread
One thing you can tell from the film is that very right-handed dominant. That was mentioned at the draft and it's true but certainly can be fixed. He can finish left-handed so that's a start. When you're not incredibly explosive, you have to sharpen your skills. Love that he has a step-back though every guard has one now. I think if you saw him at the Wiz workout, he was around 7% bodyfat compared to what he was at Oregon. So he shed some of that baby fat and that will help him with his quickness.
I don't know if we have a good one or great one. But I do like him as a player. At least the versatility over a guy like Smith or Walker, though both are more explosive. I think if he can do one thing well in his first season and that's defend.

I also like the fact that he is physical. He wil throw his weight around and knock smaller defender off balance and still maintain his balance. He also lands exceptionally well which means he won't have knee problems like bradley beal and john wall, oubre, and porter.
Build your team w/5 shooters using P. Pierce Form deeply bent hips and lower back arch at same time b4 rising into shot. Elbow never pointing to the ground! Good teams have an engine player that shoot volume (2000 full season) at 50 percent.Large Hands

With Ernie's bungling anything is possible, but we would be prepared to let him walk if it came to it

Maybe, maybe not. Some mocks had Brown going later. Some mocks had Brown going as high #18 to San Antonio.

Re: The Troy Brown Thread
The more HW I do, the more I love this pick. All he needs to do is develop that 3pt shot, and he already has great form.
He’s going to be an analytic monster on the defensive side, always in the right spot, great team defender, gets steals, not elite lateral quickness, but doesn’t gamble, just uses his IQ and keeps guys infrot.
Excited to see his shot in the summer league and ability to slash to the rim and finish.

I like his ability to handle the ball and create open looks for others with some very impressive passing.

I agree. I'm looking forward to seeing play. I still think we need shooters --- maybe we'll get some. But I really like Brown's game from the clips I've seen. I think he can become a decent 3point shooter. I think he shot 74 percent from the line.

Re: The Troy Brown Thread
I don’t know if he’ll make it but there have been enough forwards in the NBA thathave grown into something special for us to at least be optimistic. Butler, Kawhi, PG and Iggy to name a few. Coming off a year where we just got humbled the team will be hungry and have a focused mindset. Hopefully that rubs off on Brown and he works hard from day one. He’ll have to fight just to get playing time which is also good. We still need to address our problematic front court but one thing at a time. NBA fans overvalue athleticism and undervalue skill. I look at the tape of our guy and think that he has a chance to be better than guys like Josh Jackson, Ingram and Wiggins. Only time will tell though.

I have to agree. He needs to eliminate off the dribble 3’s and work on his jumper, which if you here him talk he is confident in. As soon as that comes he’ll be a competent player. His handles and playmaking ability is fluid enough to where he’ll give teams fits if they have to run him off the 3-point line. Compared to Beal, Porter and Oubre, Brown’s handles and playmaking ability is already significantly better than there’s. You put Brown on a team where he doesn’t have to be a primary scorer but there’s still ball movement, like the Spurs or the Warriors and he would be very impressive. Hopefully the Wizards incorporate “everyone eats” more into their offensive philosophy next season.

The B's Knees should be a regular feature

Loved when Brown was on the wizards podcast after his pre draft workout and said he watched a ton of Otto Porter and wanted to be a similar type of player that can do a little bit of everything.
Crunch time when we close with Wall-Beal-Oubre-Brown-Otto..... it’s gonna be awesome. Switch 1-5.

Brown will probably barely play this year cause brooks. Oubre will probably gone in some fashion next year. Otto after he opts in or out cause he is probably smart enough to abandon this sinkhole of a franchise.

Where/how is he going to get the minutes? Not too-many 18 y/o's get put into the rotation, he'll most-likely be in the G-League for most of the season.

This is simple
Wall Sato
Beal Brown/Sato
Oubre Brown/Sato
Porter Brown
I really have no clue what NBA you've been watching? Picking a wing over a traditional Center is a much better move. Like have you been reading the reports about Williams already missing Celtics team related events/knee issues/serious questions about his work ethic?
He’s going to be 19 by the time the season starts, did you see what Tatum did this past season as an 18 year old? What about Anunoby?
They can EASILY get him starters minutes if they wanted to. A smart coach would give him atleast 24 a night on this team.
