Hadn't considered Randolph. Interesting. Wonder if he'd be interested in filling a bench role.

There are several flaws with the whole "wait til next year" perspective. First, next year's class isn't *that* much more impressive, especially when you consider the $$$ players will be looking for and the likelihood that their current teams will try to re-sign them. Second, most of the league will have cap space, increasing competition and increasing the cost of free agents. Third, what we've heard is that Devin wants to sign that max extension this summer rather than next, which greatly decreases the amount of space we'll have available. Fourth, everyone in this organization wants to compete ASAP, and further moves to delay our progress (like taking on a bad contract for another draft pick) will not be looked upon favorably by just about anyone. Fifth, if you do manage to get competitive this season, we'll have trade assets available to trade for significant new additions, and players will finally want to come here. Sixth, any four-year deal you sign next season (which is the likelihood for any decent FA, given the competition we'll face) will extend into the Ayton/Bridges first max year, at which time we can reasonably expect to have four max contracts on the books, before we include whatever FA acquisition we would make next season: not a problem for a contract we sign this offseason.

Phew! Guess that's more than a few. All these factors considered, I expect us to use this year's cap space.
You make some valid points and the fact that more teams will have room next year is a real danger.

It kind of depends on what their ultimate goal is. If it's add a star via trade or FA then this summer isn't the answer and they should keep the flexibility to sign a max fa or space to make trading for one easier. If they play better this year then guys might want to come and be that last piece.

If the goal is just to grab a good solid starter or two then this summer is a great opportunity to get a guy on a reasonable deal. One thing that kind of sucks for the suns is this is as bad of a pg fa class as I ever remember and the stretch 4 market isn't much better.

Then we can go after Weems. He was a big factor and really changed our franchise. Can we sign players from the Big 3?

The McD regime doesn't leak. That "Suns trying to move up for Ball" claim was either rumormill speculation embellished with the always handy "sources say", or it was intentionally floated out by the FO for possible effect. If purposely floated, why would they attach Ball's name to their want to move up to #2? Intention.

Suns may have been really trying to jump to 2, but if true, I'd bet it was in effort to get in front of the Celts or Sixers (whoever had #3) for fear one would take Jackson. Lakers were getting Ball, either at the 2 spot or 4..well? That would be one of McD's selling point to the Lakers brass for a trade.

Suns would've taken Ball at #4

Thinking more like a GM and less like a fan would help you understand why your claim has been countered, but if retorting with a conspiracy theory meme does it for you, that's fine.

I'm not a fan of Ball. I understand your theory but because you believe it doesnt make it true. There were persistent rumors about Ball and the Suns going back into the college season. There was a strong positional fit as well. I posted those two articles as proof there were connections between Ball and the Suns, nothing more. I dont believe that Ford had everything correct or that Gambo did either.

Maybe it was a smoke screen, maybe it wasn't but stop acting like you are RC Buford cause you ain't.

If they spend big on a PG I could see randoph on a cheap deal. He's always been a tallented guy and is still pretty young.

That's speculation. Good well founded, good sensed speculation. My guess in no, but McD may have taken Ball if the Suns traded for the #2 spot, that's not the conflict for me. The claim was there was proof the Suns were going to specifically take Ball after they obtained the #2 per a sources says report. Because why stop at just leaking that you're trying to move up when you can also let'em know who your target player at the same time? Basic GM 101 stuff.

I will predict we see a big suns contact announced in the next 24 hours........ The Booker extension :)

I know fans talk about waiting but Booker has to protect himself from a career ending or altering injury. Plus the suns need to protect themselves in case this year goes really poorly and all the sudden Booker decides to get a 3+1 offer sheet next summer and the suns lose two years of team control. A straight 5 year extension this summer is a good move for both sides.

Then the best solution may very well be to grab the best FA available and fill the holes at 1 and 4 via trade. In other words, sign one of the several quality wings available and deal TJ to a team that understands his value and potential. Or just trade for players who can fit into our cap space.

In fact, this seems like the more probable path forward, doesn't it?

Plus if they make a bad free agent decision or overpay that might be a backstory to their BIG "move" in extending Booker.

look for Booker to ask for a trade now after his bbf got released by the Suns, just as Markieff did when his brother got traded by the suns.

Return to Phoenix Suns
