They actually attacked and had over 20 shots. What style did russia have other than sit back and pray for penalties? Spain controlled possession, got in the box, and had opportunities. At least they tried to win

At first I thought there was a foul on that grab by Russia during the last couple minutes of extra time but now after seeing how the penalty kicks played out it probably wouldn't have even mattered because Spain would have gotten denied on that penalty anyway LOL

Yeah that it was. They were probably scared to call it because it was Russia and if they had lost on a call like that it would have been chaos. I think the league was trying to protect the refs there. Had that been any other country other than the host country I think they call it no doubt

Their goal was a fluke (granted so was Russia's) and other than that there was like one attempt that I thought was dangerous, the rest of their attempts were weak.

Russia pushed some opportunities at least, they were supposedly over-matched in terms of talent so not sure what you expect them to do. Spain could have pushed the ball but never did, just walked it up. Their movement was non-existent off the ball, just guys standing around. If they played more aggressively, they would have scored. Not like Russia is some dominant defensive team, Spain just made them look good and gave them plenty of time to set up their defense the whole game.

I don’t know what else you want Spain to do with Russia’s wall back there. They got 15 shots on target (rodrigo had some good shots coming in, Iniesta had one, Isco played a great game). They weren’t clinical but they tried to score waaaaay more than Russia did. Neither team played great but Russia played anti-football.

Nah, it was debatable. That kind of holding/grabbing happens on every set piece. Can;t call that at that point.

Well back in 2002 South Korea gets a lot of zebra's love while Portugal, italy and Spain were the victims. So go figure, but I do agree Spain has regressed a lot since 2012 euro champ and it is time to rebuild.

If Croatia get past Dans to play against Slavians, I expect a war (due to their history with Serbia and Russia is like a cousin of Serbia).

No it doesn't not like that. You can't grab the mans hips with both hands like that and pull him back, that's an obvious foul. The only thing questionable about that call is whether or not he would have been close enough to still make a play on the ball without being held back, because from the replay it looks like the pass was a little long anyways.

Oh boy. That's a one-sided view right there... :nonono:

Bad teams playing with 9 - 10 men as their last defensive line: the world applauds. great effort.
Good teams try to find a way through that destructive game style: people bash them for holding tha ball.

You'd love to live in Germany. Media here is as bad as the knicks beat writers.

Spain had the lead, so Russia had to attack and Spain was still being super passive so don't blame it on the 9-10 defense line.

Not to mention Spain can move up their players more to the offensive side of the field in this scenario. If your team has the ball that much and couldn't score, that's their problem. I was rooting for Germany and they had the same issue minus one second half and still took a miracle by Kroos for them to win that game.

See that's the thing, how many times did Spain actually make an attempt to find a way through that "destructive game style"? Spain needed to be more direct at times and force the issue, knowing that Russia would likely give up possession in less than 10seconds and Spain can attempt again.

Can't wait to watch the Uruguay-France game, hopefully Cavani is fit to play. It's going to be very interesting to see how France looks when they can't just simply out run anybody because of the lack of space they have. They'll have to make quick decisions and be extremely precise with their passes.
