I'm not so sure the spurs want leonard there to start the season. I think they are done with him. Like, completely done. I actually think the waiting game has a decent chance to backfire on them if leonard gets traded to a really good team that he ends up liking.
Minds can change. Especially over the course of an entire year. I do agree however that we shouldn't give up too much for him at this point. Unless he agrees on extension the spurs aren't getting much.
I would still give up one valuable pick and a couple of other picks and then just match salaries with players we can do without forr a chance of convincing leonard to stay. And also a very very strong one year chance at the very least for banner 18.
Possible complications and impediments include:
-- We might need to manufacture a Monroe S&T to make it happen.
-- There would then be the draft pick cost of accounting for Monroe's salary, unless San Antonio just absorbed an overpay for him themselves.
-- We might be more willing to trade Rozier if Smart were signed long term.
-- Luxury tax implications might arise, especially if Smart is signed for more than a QO.
Can they S&T Monroe if he only played under half a season here? Can they combine Monroe with another couple players still?
I'm not aware of any limitations on that. If a guy was on your roster at the end of the previous season, you can generally S&T him. I don't think there are any asterisks for whatever they call the exception that lets you sign up for 120% or less of last year's salary.
