So who has cash left to sign him? Are we at the point where it’s either he works out a deal with boston or he takes the qo?

Pretty much. Atlanta and Sac.

If he goes to Sacro he will pretty much have proven Jackie's reporting as correct.

If SAC offers him a $15M year then God bless him and I hope he accepts and gets paid.
Enjoy being irrelevant in SAC for the rest of your career.

Bradley - 2/25
Exum - 3/33
Evans - 1/12
Caldwell Pope - 1/12
No way Smart gets more than 13/year. I think he's back on QO and tries again next year.

It would be a mistake to overpay for Smart, who already seems to think a bit too highly of himself on the court. Do we think that his shot selection will improve if he’s being paid $15million a year? Seems he and his agent need a dose of humility.

I haven’t read this whole thread and this has probably been said but Danny must feel like he’s having a flashback to ten years ago with Tony Allen’s free agency. We’ve been here before! Oklahoma schools, broken jump shots, and all.

They play a different position and have different offensive games but I agree, Marcus Smart is basically TA does dumb stuff but hustles and makes great plays on defense. Both net positive players, neither worth overpaying. I think smart takes the QO at this point no one is going to pay him this year, if you can lock him up at 3/24 do it, maybe you keep him, we need some salaries for trades later too.

When Tony left us for Memphis, he signed for 3.2m/year with a 58m cap, or just over 5% of the cap. The equivalent today would be a hair over 5m per year. I think Smart is a bit more valuable than Tony was back then, but he seems to be expecting closer to 15% of the cap. I don't think he's 3 times as valuable as a guy who went on to be a 3x defensive 1st team and 3x defensive 2nd team player just because he can distribute a little and shoot just as inefficiently.

Is this taking longer than it should? I would of thought it if he was that keen to come back he potentially would of taken the QO considering the market?

Business is business. I don't mind him waiting it out. Obviously the Pacers are out of the race for him as well as they signed Evans.
Good assessment:

The more his re-signing drags out, the more I think he's gonna get traded to San Antonio.

Any chance IT makes a return home if Smart money is too rich?

Would love to see it. Dont see him wanting to come off the bench behind the guy that he was traded for. He wanted the Brinks truck. Orlando will give it to him.

Smart giving us joy and headaches in game is the same this offseason. Headaches with re-signing but joy with the result of contract negotiations.

Re: Jackie Mac on Marcus Smart's RFA--"He's going for the money"
Reggie Jackson forced his way off of a Westbrook/Durant OKC team because he wanted to lead his own team rather than just being a cog in it. IIRC he turned down $12M a season offer from them, was traded to Detroit and signed for $16M per season.
Fans need to make up their mind, I mean I know it's different subsets, but fans want to kill this kid for going for the money rather than taking less to stay on a good team, but then bury guys who take less to sign with Golden State.

Problem with this is that it turns ugly because it essentially forces the player who believes they're worth more with the team he believes is lowballing him and not valuing him. From the other side the team has a malcontent who thinks they're better than they are and worth more who took millions less to be able to leave you in a year who you gotta play even though they'll be in business for themselves to pad their stats and get that big contract in UFA.

Why would he rush if there is still a chance another team will force Boston to bid up its offer by matching theirs?

If the rest of the team stays as constituted, Brad could easily restrict his playing time if it came to that.
