Agree we will need someone(s) to counter the "downer" side that Rivers and Howard bring (not to mention the other emotional players we have). Not sure Diaw is the answer. Diaw last saw action with the Spurs 2 years ago. He was getting 17 mins as a backup PF, and 3rd C. He was just a presence, as in he was just there to occupy space, at the end of games, etc. I'm not sure he will add much for us, other than, as you say, a cheerleader. We need somebody who can cheer these guys on, but is also, at least, marginally productive. Not sure who that is...
