No need to argue about it I read the board daily and have seen every advanced stat. My prodigious gut still tells me he jacks bricks and throws it away at the most inopportune times. $6 mill for one year I'm cool with which is looking like what he'll get. It seems there's no demand for him at this point.
Honestly yeah basically this.
We're all RealGM posters, we've all read his fans analysis and watched his entire career. Nothing anyone is going to bring up will be a new perspective.
I could see the Kings just throwing out money at Smart... but I mean realistically these teams should be smart enough to do what the other teams in the NBA are doing.
So instead of signing Smart who isn't someone you want to waste your cap space on to a long term contract... just give him a big one year salary.
Kings have room, if they really can't get anyone else they can just throw Smart 18 mllion for one season, perserve their cap room for next season, have one year where their rookies "benefit" from Smart's "culture impact" but most importantly gets the **** out of the way next year so their young guns have the minutes they need to develop. The Kings after only maybe the Suns have endless young prospects that need minutes at every position and shouldn't waste it on stop gap role players like Smart.
Offer sheets for RFAs must be a minimum of 3 years. Can't sign him to 1 year deals.
I think it is 2 years
When a restricted free agent wants to sign with another team, the player and team sign an offer sheet, the principal terms of which the original team is given two days to match.4 The offer sheet must be for at least two seasons (not including option years), and a standard NBA contract (not a Two-Way contract). If the player's prior team also submitted a maximum qualifying offer, then the offer sheet must be for at least three seasons (not including option years).
The 3 years is for max guys I guess
If the player is coming off the fourth year of his rookie scale contract, then in addition to a qualifying offer, his team can also submit a maximum qualifying offer. A maximum qualifying offer is for five seasons at the maximum salary with 8% annual raises. It can contain no options, ETOs or bonuses of any kind, and must be fully guaranteed. When a team submits a maximum qualifying offer (in essence "stepping up" with a maximum contract offer before the player hits the free agent market), it places a more stringent requirement on other teams' offer sheets (see below).

Oh here we go. The old "I CAN BEAT (insert NBA player here) IN ONE ON ONE!" nonsense.
There is not a single person on this forum who can beat any NBA player in a game of horse. Point blank. Period.
Speak for yourself. I'm 6'7' 280 I could post up many and NBA player. I played with Camby, Best, Rowe, Curley, etc etc certainly not HOF ers but there are some sorry excuses for players. I guarantee you I could beat a few players in horse. Now could i make it up and down the floor more than 3 times at full speed? Another story.
Hey Man, nice shot!

Very cool. So I guess it has to be for 2 years. That would give me pause as a Kings GM. We'll have our pick the following year, and we don't need to waste minutes on Smart when either our lottery backcourt of Fox and Hield shines or fails... either way it's a question that will need to be answered.
The starting money would have to be something though that makes it really difficult for Ainge to accept and stay under the cap. Something like 11 million or something.
But yeah either way tying up your cap space for 2 years isn't the best. Good to know!

I've been stanning for Smart before all of you. 15th overall started the trend. Trash list.
That's because you're the president of the team, 15th is the GM, FSN is the assistant GM. Constable can be the coach now that it's time to hang em up, and we can promote Brackdan or Bad Thoma to the lineup.

ConstableGeneva wrote:How many teams have that kind of money/cap space and the need for him at that price? And if he's hoping for a S&T, there's no incentive for Ainge to do that unless he's getting a young prospect and unprotected pick or a star back (no sane team will do that deal anyway).
Talk to the Spurs and Uncle Dennis, Marcus!
Well actually. If you looked at our cap and made the conclusion that we can't pay Rozier and Smart at the same time in the future and we can get a future first, that's the correct long term move.
Assume, like Steven's playoff lineups suggest Ainge also knows Rozier is by far the better player to keep long term.
This would allow us to get an asset for Smart instead of one year QO and next off season off to the Nets/ATL or some terrible team that will overpay and give him 8mil a year for 5 years.
I just don't see any team that would care enough about Smart to agree to a S&T for anything more than a second rounder... and since we still have way too many picks we might as well use the boost for this season over an extra second rounder.

Re: Jackie Mac on Marcus Smart's RFA--"He's going for the money"
This whole thing over Rozier playing more minutes in the playoffs is a weak ass argument. They had no Kyrie, they needed scoring, everyone on earth acknowledges that Rozier is a better scorer than Smart, so naturally Rozier was needed more in these past playoffs. If Kyrie had been playing, you must be tripping on some strong ass **** if you think Rozier would have played more than Smart.

Yeah two guaranteed years
The 3 year thing would pretty much prevent a player from seeking an offer sheet. If somebody puts a maximum qualifying offer out there, there is no real point in seeking an offer sheet from another team (even if you want to leave). You would get less money and the original team would match.

I root for Marcus. I love his grit. I just think his net net is way overestimated by a vocal faction here. I'm all in on 1 year $8 million. I also agree with what an earlier poster said he's going to get 20-25 mins when I feel like he should be situational.
