Derwin James on robbery: “I wouldn’t wish that upon anybody”
Posted by Darin Gantt on August 3, 2018, 6:11 AM EDT

AP
Chargers first-rounder Derwin James finally made it to the practice field Thursday, after missing the first four days of camp with a hamstring injury. But after what he went through off the field in June, he’s glad to be here at all.

Via Eric Williams of ESPN.com, the rookie safety confirmed reports that he was robbed at gunpoint on June 23, with thieves getting away with a gold chain and his Rolex, after slashing three of his tires so he couldn’t give chase.

“I wouldn’t wish that upon anybody,” James said about the incident. “It happened. It was just one of those things that you never expect to happen to you, but it happened, and I’m just happy to be out here playing football.”

James wasn’t harmed during the robbery, and he made the team aware of what happened immediately.

He was activated from the non-football injury list yesterday.

Todd Bowles seems unfazed by the new helmet rules

Getty Images
The disconnect continues regarding the impact that coaches expect the new helmet rules to have and the impact the new helmet rules actually will have.

Jets coach Todd Bowles on Thursday shrugged at the changes, hours before everyone got a taste of the number of flying yellow flags the changes will cause.

“We teach it the right way and they play the right way,” Bowles told reporters. “It’s really teaching football to be played the right way. There are going to be hard collisions, but if the helmet’s up, and you have to keep the helmet out of the way and hit with the shoulder, which most of the team do all the time, there’s an occasional head-to-head when someone’s putting their head down, but we don’t teach it any differently. We feel like we’ve been teaching it the right way the whole time.”

Of course, it’s hard to teach the new rules when it remains unclear whether the new rules will be applied as written.

“We understand the rule and the education of it,” Bowles said. “I think it’s more for the officials to call than the teams to have. We understand what the ruling is, but again we’re teaching it the right way, and we’re not trying to teach it that way at all, so it shouldn’t affect us. There may be a mistake here or there but we try to avoid that as much as possible.”

Still, as the Hall of Fame game showed, when the teaching ends and the games begin, instinct and muscle memory come together and prompt players to drop their helmets when bracing for contact. So the question becomes whether — and when — the flags, fines, ejections, and suspensions will help players unlearn techniques that, apparently, they never were taught.

Based on Thursday’s game between the Bears and the Ravens, the answers so far are no and not yet.

Free agent CB Alterraun Verner worked out for the Giants on Friday.

Verner was one of the better cornerbacks in the league during his prime and even earned All-Pro recognition with the Titans in 2013, though the 29-year-old has spent his past few seasons as a scarcely-used backup. He'd just be a depth signing for the Giants, who recently lost supplemental pick Sam Beal to a season-ending shoulder injury.

Jets LB Dylan Donahue has pleaded guilty to a May 17 arrest for DUI in Billings, Montana.

The judge called for a three-month suspended sentence, meaning Donahue can avoid jail time if he pays a $1,000 fine and abstains from using drugs or alcohol during his three-month probationary period. Donahue, who spent a month in rehab for alcohol abuse this offseason, has now pled guilty to two DUI charges in a span of three days. Per ESPN Jets reporter Rich Cimini, a suspension "seems inevitable." The second-year linebacker registered five tackles over 53 defensive snaps last season.

According to James Palmer of NFL Network, teammates acknowledge that second-round WR Courtland Sutton has already established himself as the Broncos' No. 3 wideout.

Palmer was told this by a group of veteran cornerbacks, who said it's "not even a competition." The SMU alum has impressed with his size and ability to win balls in traffic, though his route-running remains a work in progress. Sutton's rookie-year volume is up for debate—veterans Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders remain the focal point of Denver's passing attack—though the 22-year-old is still worthy of late-round consideration in most fantasy formats.

Eli Apple, Evan Engram sent off practice field after a fight

AP
New Giants coach Pat Shurmur is showing no tolerance for training-camp shenanigans.

Via Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com, Shurmur kicked tight end Evan Engram and cornerback Eli Apple off the practice field after the duo got into a dust-up during practice on Saturday.

The video, shot at a distance, shows the two players tangling near the sideline after Engram catches a pass. It’s possible Engram took issue with Apple diving toward Engram’s legs, but it’s Apple who makes first contact after the play, shoving Engram. Engram then throws the ball at Apple.

Whatever sparked it, the end result was enough to get both of them run off the practice field.

Giants reportedly offer OBJ less than $16 million per year

AP
The Giants and Odell Beckham Jr. have begun contract negotiations. The negotiations may not last very long.

Josina Anderson of ESPN reports that the Giants have offered Beckham less than $16 million per year.

If that’s the new-money average, it would put him out of the top five at the position, led by Steelers receiver Antonio Brown at $17 million per year. Buccaneers receiver Mike Evans comes in second at $16.5 million, Texans receiver DeAndre Hopkins makes $16.2 million, as does Rams receiver Brandin Cooks. Fifth on the list is Chiefs receiver Sammy Watkins.

It’s unclear whether that’s the Giants’ final position. It’s possible that it’s an opener or something close to it, and that Beckham’s camp views it as an insult — and has opted to leak the number to the media in order to put pressure on the team to do better.

Chances are it’s the latter; that the Giants have room to move but that Beckham and his agent believe that there’s no way the Giants will get to where they need to be if they’re starting south of $16 million annually. Last year, Beckham said he wants to be the highest-paid player in the game, a bar that now sits at $30 million in annual new money.

The Giants will never give him that much. They may not even get close to $20 million. And Beckham, who decided not to hold out in order to force the issue to a head now, will have to decide whether to take the best long-term offer the Giants put on the table or go year-to-year, hitting the open market after his option year at $8.5 million and two years of the franchise tag.

Coleman cost the Bills a 2020 7th-round pick
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Bills gave up a seventh-round pick in 2020 for Corey Coleman.

Seventh-round picks are not worth much to begin with, and that is doubly true for a pick which will not convey until 2020. The price both accentuates how good a move this is for Buffalo and how much Cleveland wanted to get rid of the 2016 first-round pick. Coleman is heading into arguably the worst passing game in the league, but he should see more targets than he would have with the Browns.

Jets sixth-round RB Trenton Cannon is pushing for the No. 3 job.

With Elijah McGuire sidelined by a broken foot, the Jets need someone to step up behind Isaiah Crowell and Bilal Powell, and Cannon has made an early push for the job. "We know he’s fast," coach Todd Bowles said. "He’s got a chance to make some plays and he’s fast so it will be great in preseason games." At worst, Cannon is a name to know for preseason DFS.

Weird trade for the Browns, thought he would be worth a little more than that.

Dez Bryant - WR - Free Agent
NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports the Browns remain interested in free agent Dez Bryant.

Josh Gordon still hasn't reported and Corey Coleman was traded on Sunday, so receiver is a position of need in Cleveland. Rapoport has reported that the ball is in Bryant's court. What that really means is that the Browns have yet to offer Bryant enough money to even commit to a visit. The Browns still have plenty of cap space if they want to make something happen.

SNY reports Josh McCown has been "the best quarterback" in Jets camp and "shows no signs of losing the grip on his job."
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Monday that Sam Darnold "has a very fair shot" at Week 1 duties, but if he's going to dislodge McCown, it will probably have to be in the preseason. Regardless of who is under center for Week 1, both players should make starts in 2018. McCown does not stay healthy for 16 games, and top-three quarterbacks rarely ride the pine for 16 game
