Re: Welcome Zhaire Smith
There's a difference between being a bad defender and getting outright physically abused on the defensive end. Jerryd Bayless is a bad defender, but he doesn't get bullied. He's a stout 6'3" 200 pounds. Shamet and Korkmaz are bad defenders that are also physically underdeveloped. Which further compounds the issue.
In terms of Bayless falling off, offensively. Don't we think having torn ligaments in his left wrist had something to do with that? I just think a healthy Jerryd Bayless is our best immediate option at back-up SG.

Re: Welcome Zhaire Smith
I'm not arguing with any of that, but the fact remains-- they're all bad defenders. A concern I have with Bayless is that he could very well still have lingering wrist issues and typically guys his age who miss the better part of two consecutive seasons tend to lose a step or two.Kobblehead wrote:There's a difference between being a bad defender and getting outright physically abused on the defensive end. That's the question though. Is he going to be healthy? He's been here for 2 years and basically was healthy for 2-3 weeks of games. The way he was just completely disengaged the last few months of the year makes me think he may be checked out.

This was written back in June just prior to the draft, but its a good read that gives some insight on Zhaire's character and work ethic. It also speaks to the rareness in which he flew onto the scene as a prospect.

Per Pompey, the team expects Zhaire to return by around Christmas.

Good news. He has a lot to learn being a guard. It could allow him to gain new skills.

If that turns out to be a realitic timeline he'll only miss roughly 2 months of the season.

Who knows with BB sometimes, that is weird, maybe he should've meant Dec 17th when we go to Texas to play the Spurs since Zhaire is from Texas.

Yeah it's extremely weird to project a player returning to the lineup at an exact date 3-4 months from now. I think he was given an amount of time in weeks and sort of did the math unintentionally and said it out-loud.

Re: Welcome Zhaire Smith
Doubt it.
I expect one of two things to happen with Zhaire.
1) he isnt back in December .
2) If he does come back, he contributes next to nothing as he cant play forward (too small) and has never been a guard and needs a TON of reps to be a viable option there of which he wont get that sitting in a cast.
I like him as a prospect for sure, but I think he is at LEAST a year away from really contributing,

True, very true. However, there is likely no Rookie of the Year incentive involved as in Ben Simmons' or even Embiid's case. No tanking involved either. Sixers are in win mode so if Zhaire can come back in December and start getting run time in practice and possibly in games, then the Sixers won't hold him out like they did with Simmons.

Maybe the 12th is 4 months from surgery?

Re: Welcome Zhaire Smith
Furkan Korkmaz Had a different type of fracture in foot but when he returned after 3-4 month he wasn’t ready and only played in garage time and sixers teams blew huge leads with him even in garbage time.
So if Smith can’t return by December. And he’s projected as a project. It’s safer to play bayless.

If he's ready, his defense and cutting should be great with Simmons and Fultz. 3 athletic wings that finish efficiently.
Steals and fastbreaks are going to be exciting.

Re: Welcome Zhaire Smith
Zhaire has the chance to be something special. With his athleticism and being able to play with Ben, Dario and Kelle...with all that passing built into the offensive scheme as well as how good all 3 of those passers are, he will have plenty of opportunities to shine.
If he can come even somewhat close to being the catch and shoot player Covington is, he could absolutely turn into a stud.
I'm excited for the future of this franchise for sure.
