Just finished watching the whole scrimmage and have some quick notes to make.
- Everything looked a lot more fluid and faster on offense without Melo, the ball never got stuck with anyone for too long,it moved around and everyone's role looked defined.
- Schroeder is better than I expected. This guy is smoooooth. I love Russ but watching OKC play with a skillful traditional PG is refreshing. His change of pace, ability to navigate the pick n roll, find the open man with a quality pass is really exciting. He will absolutely feast on 2nd units.
- Patterson looks a different player this season. What was really exciting is that he was not hesitant to shoot it and that is what we need from him, I believe he took 8 3pt attempts and made 6 of them.
- PG looks more comfortable and he makes everything look so effortless. It looks like we have some better sets getting him open and getting him the ball. Adams was Adams, absolutely a bully in the paint and dominated the glass.
- In his short time on the court I can already tell that Noel will be able to absolutely lock down the paint against 2nd units, he also had a nice play dishing to an open man and hitting a nice baseline jumper. Donovan played him at the 4 with Adams for a bit and it wasn't a good look on offense, hopefully he doesn't play that during the season lol
- Grant and Ferguson were a tad disappointing for me. Grant tried to force the issue a lot and didn't always make the best plays, on the flipside that is not his game and he should hopefully look more comfortable with better players around him. Ferguson still looks like a boy among men, he just lacks confidence in his game.
- I really liked what TLC showed and he would be a shoe-in to start at the 2 this season if it was up to me personally. He looked confident and comfortable when he got the ball, he could navigate screens, was getting into the lane at will at one stage, was making good passes, was always moving off the ball and making smart cuts, had a really smooth play driving to the basket in transition with half the white squad draped all over him, and was also sound defensively. He didn't shoot a great % but most of his shots were close misses and his jumpshot looked smooth so I'm not too concerned about it.
- Burton needs to get minutes this season, out of all the young guys he is probably the most exciting and intriguing for me. 6'11 wingspan, weight and strength of a center, quickness and athleticism of a guard, can shoot the 3. I would love to experiment with this guy at the 4, he has the profile to defend there and he would be a massive mismatch for most 4's in the league.
I really liked the look of the offense so far, the ball never got stuck with anyone for too long and it was always moving. I hope when Russ comes back he adapts to the way we are trying to play but I fear we will go back into old habits. Starting the season I would go with.
PG: Schroder
SG: TLC
SF: George
PF: Patterson
C: Adams
PG: Burton
SG: Abrines
SF: Ferguson/Hami/Nader (no one I really love as a backup 3, potentially when Russ comes back I would put Burton here)
PF: Grant
C: Noel
I would love to hear if anyone has anything to add or saw things differently from the scrimmage.
