it's what berra says he did. thunder had 1700+ spot up possessions last year according to synergy. westbrook was responsible for more than half the team's total assists. would a rough estimate of 850-900 total spot up possessions initiated by westbrook be fair? would a 350 possession sampling of that amount be fair? meh. probably meaningful in that case, but i would still wonder about possessions that are not captures i.e. when a shot is not attempted but the pass was intended for a spot up shot attempt.

Again, don't know. But calling him a homer and saying you don't trust it seems to fit your MO

uh he is a homer. it's his "MO", not mine. i don't trust any data 'in a vacuum'.

I didn't say it was your MO. You have your own. You're free to not trust data. It still remains.

This might be my imagination, but his shot looks different, doesn't it?

Also: Seems to be more active

Definitely less arc on those shots compared to what we have seen in the past

Abrines starting the season banged up. Shocking.

So Kyle Lowry just said that Nurse told him and Leonard to just play and “figure it out.”

Donovan received a lot of criticism for telling Russ/PG/Melo to do this.

Is this a bad sign for Toronto’s new (highly touted) head coach?

Yes. It is a bad sign. They made a mistake in changing coaches just like OKC did when they went from Brooks to Donovan. I think most people already knew they should have kept Casey.

Last season, his first with the Thunder, Patterson said he arrived at camp weighing 235 pounds, give or take a couple. He’s 242 now, but you’d never know it. He’s retained a chiseled physique but appears significantly slimmer than a season ago.

I think this is very good news.

I just hope Billy Donovan realizes what he has in him and doesn't get caught up in his irrational love for Grant. I'd hate for Patterson to get screwed over yet again.

I think the on court play of Grant and Patterson will speak for itself. I’ll believe in Patterson once I see it. Grant has higher upside defensively this season and if he has continued to improve upon his paint attacks, he should be enough offensively, but if Patterson can get back to defending like he has in the past, we will be fine with him as a starter.

TL;DR = I’m skeptical about Patterson’s perimeter defense.

Athleticism != good defense. Patterson is a much, much better team defender than Grant.

getrichordie wrote:I’m skeptical about Patterson’s perimeter defense.

Neither him nor Grant are perimeter players. Instead of acting like Grant can guard wings properly, we should focus on keeping our wings on the opposing wings instead of lazily switching everything even though there's no need to.

It was pretty clear how mismatched the teams were but I didn’t see any real surprises. I wasn’t able to give it my undivided attention but TLC had some nice moves. Ferguson had some ugly shots. Schröder is pretty slick at times.

Just finished watching the whole scrimmage and have some quick notes to make.

- Everything looked a lot more fluid and faster on offense without Melo, the ball never got stuck with anyone for too long,it moved around and everyone's role looked defined.
- Schroeder is better than I expected. This guy is smoooooth. I love Russ but watching OKC play with a skillful traditional PG is refreshing. His change of pace, ability to navigate the pick n roll, find the open man with a quality pass is really exciting. He will absolutely feast on 2nd units.
- Patterson looks a different player this season. What was really exciting is that he was not hesitant to shoot it and that is what we need from him, I believe he took 8 3pt attempts and made 6 of them.
- PG looks more comfortable and he makes everything look so effortless. It looks like we have some better sets getting him open and getting him the ball. Adams was Adams, absolutely a bully in the paint and dominated the glass.
- In his short time on the court I can already tell that Noel will be able to absolutely lock down the paint against 2nd units, he also had a nice play dishing to an open man and hitting a nice baseline jumper. Donovan played him at the 4 with Adams for a bit and it wasn't a good look on offense, hopefully he doesn't play that during the season lol
- Grant and Ferguson were a tad disappointing for me. Grant tried to force the issue a lot and didn't always make the best plays, on the flipside that is not his game and he should hopefully look more comfortable with better players around him. Ferguson still looks like a boy among men, he just lacks confidence in his game.
- I really liked what TLC showed and he would be a shoe-in to start at the 2 this season if it was up to me personally. He looked confident and comfortable when he got the ball, he could navigate screens, was getting into the lane at will at one stage, was making good passes, was always moving off the ball and making smart cuts, had a really smooth play driving to the basket in transition with half the white squad draped all over him, and was also sound defensively. He didn't shoot a great % but most of his shots were close misses and his jumpshot looked smooth so I'm not too concerned about it.
- Burton needs to get minutes this season, out of all the young guys he is probably the most exciting and intriguing for me. 6'11 wingspan, weight and strength of a center, quickness and athleticism of a guard, can shoot the 3. I would love to experiment with this guy at the 4, he has the profile to defend there and he would be a massive mismatch for most 4's in the league.

I really liked the look of the offense so far, the ball never got stuck with anyone for too long and it was always moving. I hope when Russ comes back he adapts to the way we are trying to play but I fear we will go back into old habits. Starting the season I would go with.

PG: Schroder
SG: TLC
SF: George
PF: Patterson
C: Adams

PG: Burton
SG: Abrines
SF: Ferguson/Hami/Nader (no one I really love as a backup 3, potentially when Russ comes back I would put Burton here)
PF: Grant
C: Noel

I would love to hear if anyone has anything to add or saw things differently from the scrimmage.

From what i saw at the scrimmage i think Burton may crack a bit of playing time. Dude seems to be able to create his shot quite nicely. His passing was impressive too.
The blue teams shooting was pretty awful. Grant Tferg and TLC were throwing up a few bricks in the 1st half.
2Pat looks good man im gonna be pissed off if Billy doesnt start him. Hes exactly what this team needs at the 4.
