Im not sure I would. Not both a 1st and 3rd plus Waynes. Waynes is young and usable still now and could yet become great at some point. If you want to hand them Waynes who they can use now plus a first well go ahead. But what it really maybe should be is Waynes plus a single 2nd round pick. The 2nd round pick makes up the difference between him and Peterson now. Remember this is a player trying to leave, not us reaching out to them out of the blue to try and buy him from his team and their happy place. Waynes is a first rounder himself, pick 11. Corners can take a few years to blossom. It's a hard position to play. Rhodes was a walking bag of flaws at first. He worked into who he's become with hard work and experience.
Separate of the debate of whether the overall package is worth it, but I feel 100 percent confident saying that Waynes will never be remotely close to Peterson's level. We're talking about a player who was All-Pro as a rookie, hasn't missed a Pro Bowl since he's been in the NFL and is still in his prime. Again, that's a big price to pay, so I don't disagree with your larger point. But if Waynes had any greatness in him -- and he's at least gotten to the point where he's solid -- we'd have already seen it by now.
My biggest issue with Waynes is how inconsistent he is. It's year 4 and he can have 1 game where I go, okay now I see why he was taken so high in the 1st round. Then the very next week I can see the opposing QB picking on him every play and he cant cover to save his life and I just think how the hell is this guy still getting playing time. So ya last week he was great, but I just have little faith that it will carry over to this week.
And ya Peterson is just on a different level. And ya its not just 1 upgrade, its upgrading Waynes with Peterson, but then that also upgrades Rhodes because he will then be taking on #2s and he will be even more effective.
I personally want the trade to happen, but ya I guess long term I wont mind staying put and keeping the picks.
It's a tough choice. For one, I don't follow the day-to-day like I used to, so I have no idea if this deal is even legit. And we obviously have needs elsewhere -- offensive line, cough cough.
But the picks are tough, man. If you spend it on, say, Cordarelle Patterson, then yeah, you obviously wish you could have that back and taken Peterson in the first place. (If, again, it's even an option.) On the other hand, few teams know better than the Vikings what can happen if you overpay for a player you think can push you over the top.
It's just that, you don't have a chance to land a difference-maker of that caliber, at such a key position, very often. So yeah, I think I would pull the trigger too, even if that means we're going to struggle up front for another year or two. I don't know, maybe that's bad asset management to expect your $30 million QB to survive getting hit 10-plus times a week. But man, that's tough to turn down.
