Didnt say they didnt, but they just cant help themselves, they want more and more. Free healthcare, free college education, wipe out student loan debt, none of these things are feasible or sensible.
First of all...none of that is actually "free." It's paid for by TAX DOLLARS.
Second of all, OF COURSE IT'S FEASIBLE. Are you nuts? The college education program is a measly $47B a year. Student loan debt could have been wiped out with the last proposed military budget increase. Our current healthcare system costs $48T over ten years; a Medicare for All system would cost $32T.
You conservatives claim to be pro-life, but have no problem with 50,000 dead Americans every year due to lack of access to healthcare. You have no problem with the silly, expensive wars that cost us trillions of dollars.
You people (YEP....YOU PEOPLE) pick and choose which lives you care about, and that's why no one takes you seriously.
I'm going to go a bit deeper than i usually do so please try to keep up and watch me for the changes.
i keep harping on "free stuff" generically and claiming it wont work. And it doesn't. On many levels. But lets focus on the most destructive force of socialism. The most crushing blow to a socialistic society, also the one least talked about is What i will refer to as
The Collective Creative. <--And that is what suffers most, dies the most in socialism cultures. Capitalism comes from the word head...it refers to the mind. In capitalism,
we assume that we dont know everything. We assume that innovations will arise and "make things better." We assume that these innovations
ARE NEEDED AND NECESSARY.
We assume that a culture (as a whole) that is dependent on capitalism will adapt better. Will adapt more rapidly. Will advance better. Will advance more rapidly. You see, capitalism is not just a way of life for today. its a means to an end for a better tomorrow. A tomorrow where we may need to feed a lot more people. A tomorrow where the earth may become very hot or very cold again. A tomorrow where maybe an asteroid hits us. A tomorrow where maybe we are invaded by a surrounding culture. A tomorrow where maybe we are overwhelmed in debt from the past.
You see...its the inherent qualities of capitalism that rewards "the collective creative" to continually build upon itself and to strive for greater innovations of
efficiency and
effectiveness.
And although...some (are made to feel by the victim mongers) and though they have been left behind by the wheels of capitalism...well there is a thing called the greater good of a society at large. And that...for the most part is the macro evaluation and argument for capitalism over socialism.
On a micro level...in a vacuum let's look at "free" college:
1. For starters, we know nothing is free...and the costs just get spread around.
2. We also know that free really means paid for by the government which will pay for tuition using tax revenue...but really...at this point it really means just borrowing more money at 5% interest rates from "big banks."
3. And we know that this has only made college
more expensive and
less efficient.
4. "Big University" pushes for free college...because they simply want the free funds, unchecked by the public.
5. The poor public (thinks they) want it because they simply want the "free stuff."
6. And what seem like a win-win...ends up a major lose-lose.
What we end up with is a jobs market where everyone asks for a college diploma...I'll never forget...1993...I just came back from the US Navy...I was applying for jobs...and everyone asked for a college degree...i mean effin' lazy boy furniture was asking for a college degree for a "sales" position!! ...and they weren't alone. Everyone asked for a degree. I ended up at sportsmart...then a waiter/bartender before i got the gig at the Hilton and Towers on Michigan avenue where i became assistant director of guest services in 2 years.<--yes, i worked the entire 1996 democratic convention as hotel liasion to the CIA (because i was prior military and held a TS-SI-SCI security clearance. So I met everyone...including HRC, Oprah, mosely braun. I personally brought packages to HRC and drove Stephanopoulos to and from the airport. And the Hilton was a great place to work. Best job i ever held because back then the Hilton family still owned and ran it so in terms of great people, great spirit, fun, and making good money...it was the best. The chicago bears stayed there over night during every home game as did the cubs often, the bulls often. All the luncheons, etc. Walter Payton showed up for bears alumni stuff and had an ongoing prank with me where he would throw firecrackers in my office some other stuff. I once even raced him down wabash avenue (i smoked him).

But as most football players were real jerks, Walter was a great guy! and that was a Fun job! And it paid me very well as I was still in undergrad in those years.
But that job was not listed in a news paper. I met someone who got me "in." I had no idea then how wonderful a job that was until years later. No idea how lucky i was. And they never needed a college diploma.
My point is that MOST jobs do not require a college diploma. Most jobs require:
1. simple common courtesy
2. self respect
3. and the respect of others
4. and a willingness to learn and work hard.
The entire "point" of requiring a college degree is that high school is not preparing kids with these skills anymore. PARENTS are not preparing kids with these skills anymore. LIFE is not preparing kids with these skills anymore.
Employers are (hoping) that college has. But most colleges dont do that either.
and when you make it "free," you have killed off the very purpose of college.1. You kill off the collective creative of the individual.<--The willingness, the eagerness, the savviness of a young adult to manage their own time and balance themselves between working (to pay for college) and managing their own budget, and getting their work done both in their studies and at work. <--Thats the whole POINT of college for 80-90% of the jobs out there!!!!!
Employers simply want to know that they are choosing between multiple hard working, eager, respectful human beings. it is during the interview, hiring and trial phases of employment process where they weed out for personality fit and willingness to please and loyalty.
But we dont need college educations for this stuff. Especially "free" college educations!! By making it free, you killed the point!
Free college only kills off the collective creative in both the individual and worse a society as a whole. It makes us less prepared. Less adaptive. Less self respectful and therefore respect others less. Less mindful of costs. Less skilled at time management. Less everything!!! And more self entitled.<--This idea...that somehow...the world owes you something is anathema to the survival of a species.
We will end up with a whole lot more people that don't know even more of what they don't know.
And its only compounded by the fact that it let's the universities off the hook for teaching us. preparing us. training us. They simply get free money...and will be rewarded by a lazier public that will take even more easier classes.
I remember taking a few dance classes while in college. It was fun and my school didn't charge me for any credits over 12...so i took ballet and spanish dance (to get laid). it worked. I got laid. But i also learned a lot dancing. But is this what we want for our future? A bunch of kids taking classes to get laid all funded on the backs of the tax payers?? I mean, I earned my scholarships...i made the team. And i made the grades. And I served my time in the US navy. And these classes were not charged to anyone...they were free because after 12 credit hours i could take as many classes as I wanted.
I also farted around in many art classes, a photography class, and others...things that I actually use in both real estate and (esthetic) dentistry. And I still go dancing regularly and often...so i use that in "life." But i'm not the norm. Most guys just got a job...and coach their kids...and watch TV. And they dont need college degrees for their jobs. They just need to be respectful, willing to learn, and eager to work.
Now if someone earns a scholarship? Or their parents want to pay for yoga classes? Sure!!! I'm all for it!!!
But it makes no sense (for the tax payer) to pay for a kid to take ballet class that will never ever earn money dancing ballet and in fact is going to get a job in sales anyway. learn ballet all you want!! Its fun!! Take yoga!! I do!! But why on earth should the rest of us pay for it? let alone
OVERPAY for it???
It only makes you weaker. A lessor version of yourself. And it killed the collective creative of the entire society. It doesn't work. its inefficient. Its ineffective.
like i said, its a full rebuild.
