Jazz Lead NBA In Incentive-Laden Contracts

The Utah Jazz have ten players on their roster with incentives written into their contract for reaching off-court or on-court benchmarks, which is far more than any other team in the NBA.

These bonuses come in three types for the Jazz: on-court performance bonuses, health and health management bonuses, and offseason workout bonuses.

Rudy Gobert can make up to $2 million extra per season for incremental bonuses such as being First Team All-Defense.

Several players get a bonus if the Jazz have a defensive rating under 100 while they're on the floor.

Derrick Favors' contract contains incentives for weight and body fat percentage.

Maybe this is why the Jazz have a hard time attracting/retaining free agents. Today's cream puff stars feel entitled to everything and dont want any accountability.

But that's always been the case. I think it has more to do with location than anything else. Moreover, if all the league has are cream puff stars, then what are other teams supposed to do, lose out of spite?

Do what the Jazz do...weed out the cream puff stars by offering and sticking to incentive laden contracts.

You're looking at this entirely wrong. They get paid more for reaching incentives. It's a positive thing for the players. (i.e. $10m base salary + another $2m if you reach your goal. Now you're a $12m player, instead of $10.)

No, they have a hard time attracting free agents because it's **** Utah. Black guys don't want to live and spend all their time there.

Tell that to Deron Williams, who still lives there even after Utah traded him. Or many of the former Utah players. There is a reason that Utah has more people moving there than any other state. The outdoors are amazing. It is the Mormon culture that keeps me away.

Mitchell spent all summer there and seems to genuinely enjoy the place. Utah is a great place to live for many reasons.

is there a catch to this? I've loved the use of incentives being that its an efficient way to get the best out of employees. So why aren't more teams doing this?

Agreed, but from Boston, you can get to a lot of other major cities in a heartbeat. Not so much in Salt Lake.

Zero rings and counting... And I really like the Jazz, honest. Ricky+Mitchell+Hayward+Ingles+Gobert might have been enough this year to take out GSW.
