How does he ‘know’ he won’t be a good player into his 30’s? That’s not generally how the ego of high level athletes works.

But the reason he wants as much money and as big a contract as possible right now is because Scott Boras is his agent and certainly told him he could get this for him. And odds look now like he’s right.

Was attributed to Jeff Passan, but must have been fake - Tweet seems to have disappeared. When I saw it, I thought that this would throw the Dodgers deep into the luxury tax unless they unloaded salary - and wondered if there was a deal there for the Jays to take on a salary and a prospect.

The crazy thing is Mike Trout has been worth more than Machado and Harper COMBINED in his career.

The sides are discussing a ten-year deal, per Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area. Salary levels are not known, but Pavlovic says the Giants’ offer would “likely give Harper a chance at the record dollar figure he has been looking for.”

No worries. When he gets old they’ll put him on the Barry Bonds program.

Depending on best seasons from Bumgarner and Posey after injury filled seasons. A declining Longoria and Belt , expected to win as many games as the Jays right now. Only other thing i can think of is driving up the price for the dodgers

I guess it's in for a penny, in for a pound, but if you have one of the oldest and most expensive teams in baseball, paired with a really bad farm system, it might be time to stop doubling down on massive expenditures.

Well, that's one way to amortize a contract...

Not the same player, obviously, but the Yanks paying Hicks 10Mper doesn't seem quite as risky today...

Over/under 9.5 years left on the contract when the Phillies start regretting it?

It's bad. Real bad. But, not as bad as I first thought. It's a $25M AAV, and over a gigantic 13 year time frame you really have to consider the present value of those cash flows - $25M is going to be significantly less in real purchasing power in 2032 than it is today. Also this only takes him to his age 38 season, unlike some of the other mega deals that guarantee money at age 40 or even beyond.

I would totally not have done that contract, though. He's too inconsistent a performer - and at a non-premium position to boot - to be handing out that kind of money.
Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

I agree. And frankly, the final few years can be viewed as a sunk cost - that's Tulo money if you like. They don't need to carry him to age 39, just pay him.

Yeah, it's a 10 year, $330m contract unless Harper is atypically useful into his dotage. Which isn't crazytown money, but Harper's high enough variance that it could be reeeeeally painful. Or, overall fair, but with the benefits stacked in 2-3 seasons, while being a net hindrance the rest of the time (which, depending on the outcome of those good seasons, could be good for the Phillies, or truly aggravating).

A 10-year contract deferred slightly, then, as he's being paid over 13 years.
