Jazz, Grizzlies Could Resume Mike Conley Trade Talks In June

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Mon Mar 18, 2019 12:13 pm

The Memphis Grizzlies and Utah Jazz could pick up their trade talks involving Mike Conley around the draft.

The Grizzlies and Jazz held serious talks on Conley leading to the deadline, but no trade was ultimately executed.

The Grizzlies have begun to fully shift to rebuilding mode with their trade of Marc Gasol to the Toronto Raptors.

Conley has an Early Termination Option on his contract for the 20-21 season that he's unlikely to exercise.

Memphis should of traded him at the trade deadline. He wins games for them and has less value at draft time.

The Jazz are simply not smart or aggressive enough to properly fix the team.
Imagine if they traded for T.Harris (no chance he leaves the 76ers now) Gobert/Harris would have been the ultimate frontcourt.

Forget Mike Conley:
Jrue Holiday is younger, he is bigger, he is cheaper, he is a better fit with Mitchell in the backcourt period.

Come on Jazz do the smart thing for a change, trade for Holiday and bring in a PF that can shoot and is a good fit next to Gobert.

Exum was the perfect young salary filler and now he's hurt again. Utah's going to regret waiting. Conley, Mitchell and Ingles would have been an awesome trio.

Conley/Mitchell would be a pretty small backcourt, would you rather Holiday/Mitchell? and Gobert makes up the trio, Ingles is just a good starter who knows his role.

He'd still work. Jazz should have enough capspace if they renounce Rubios rights to send of a TPE plus Exum, Allen and a first.

Gobert/Favors/Bradley
Favors/Crowder
Ingles/Korver/Crowder
Mitchell/O'Neal
Conley/Mitchell

They'd still have the MLE to bring in another bench piece. Thats a great core to work with.

From what I heard the hang up on the original trade talks was the Grizzlies asked for Exum instead of Favors and the Jazz said no. If this is true, then Dennis Lindsay's head should roll because Exum might go down as the worst ever #5 pick ever and all the signs for this have been obvious for years now.......

Rubio/Favours for Conley would have been right deal.

That's a pretty bad trade even if Exum was healthy. Right now, how much better is he than RFA Delon Wright? If Gasol got them Valanciunas and Wright, I'd expect that Favors would have to be involved, maybe in a three- way.

I thought Jazz fans were sold on Rubio? Why the change of heart? Is it because he can't shoot?

People keep forgetting that Memphis had to pick up one of the worst contracts to move Gasol for JV. CJ Miles is owed $9M or so next season. Wright as a RFA was just a toss in. He is basically on an extended tryout with Memphis. He is an ok hybrid SG/PG, but isn't anything special, and is getting old and showing little signs of improvement since entering the league.

The deal was mostly JV for Gasol, and Memphis eats CJ's $9 million next season. It was as much of a money move for the Raptors as a basketball move to get a better passing C for this playoff run.

Mike Conley for Ricky Rubio, Dante Exum and two lottery protected first rounders seem fair. I see Utah sending two picks because the Exum contract is an albatross for them despite his young age (his injury history combined with his salary and the luxury taxes it triggers with it is not worth it). I see Memphis taking on Exum's $22M or whatever is remaining on his contract over two seasons for another first round pick. Maybe Exum like Jonas Valanciunas in the Marc Gasol trade works out and they break out once they arrive in Memphis.

Lol that trade in hindsight was awful Memphis only got a second round pick and had to eat a lot more salary. The deal looks better because JV might be breaking out and is likely to opt in if he can learn to shoot and play some better D based on his age of 26 he could be a long term fit for the small market team.It is kind of similar to Oladipo breaking out in Indiana after the PG trade but PG is having an mvp season and resigned in OKC so Thunder likely won the deal. Had Memphis moved Gasol at the beginning of the season they would have got a much better return including a first round pick. Had they moved him in the 2017 summer when the salary cap exploded they could have got a king's ransom from the Celtics or another team (Gasol contract at that point was also considered a bargain because he signed a new deal in 2015 before the cap spiked the next two seasons).

JV was never going to play like he does on Memphis for the Raptors in their current form. And Masai got rid of Miles and Wright's excess salary as well as gaining luxury tax savings for the team. Masai also got Gasol to waive his trade kicker which saved luxury tax. All for a second round pick he got a playoff tested big who is a better defender and passer than JV in a hail marry pursuit to impress Kawhi before he becomes a ufa so they can resign him. The move was more wooing Kawhi in free agency as it was towards improving the team.

The market for Gasol was much different in my opinion. Conley is the 11th highest paid player in the league. He makes 10 million a year more annually then Gasol did and his contract lasts 2 more years after this season. I have always loved Conley but thats a ton for what amounts to a borderline top 10 point guard in the league and there really aren't that many teams that can absorb his deal and have it actually make sense roster-wise. The only other team that I could think of is the Pacers and thats iffy.

Getting two young players (Allen and Exum), cap relief AND a pick is about the best I think they could do. If they want more than that then they will probably end up just keeping him another season and see if his value increases when he's an expiring contract (he'll be 33 years old then).

Exum's deal really isn't that bad...definitely not "an albatross". He's 23, has shown flashes, but has had some wacky injuries. His 11 million annual average is less then KCP, Avery Bradley, Tyreke Evans, and Courtney Lee have all gotten recently and they are all similar players minus the potential. It's pretty absurd to suggest that a young player on what is essentially a 2 year deal for 10% of the salary cap is going to cost a team a first round pick just to move. It's silly.

Val's per 36 numbers this year or damn near identical in Memphis as they were in Toronto...he's just getting more minutes.

Yes, seems a like a logical move for the Jazz. Go for it. I'm sure Conley doesn't want to be on Memphis anymore. Memphis needs to rebuild.
