Draft team needs

Post#1 » by Scoots1994 » Sun Apr 21, 2019 3:53 am

Is it possible to think about team needs in the draft with only 5 players on the roster for next year?

Do they go for a wing? A guard? A shooter? A big? A defensive specialist?

They need a backup pg with length. Hard to find. May not be able to find that in the draft.

A center is always a possibility with the unknown of our center situation.

But to me, the guy in our range that is the legit perfect player for us is Matisse Thybulle. He is a dominant defensive wing. The dude is one of the best perimeter defensive players I've seen in college.

Livingston won't be back. Iguodala is aging fast and most likely will retire after next year. So a defensive wing is huge for us moving forward.

Another guy in a similar mode for us is Terance Mann from Florida State. 6'7" lock down defender and a pretty decent 3 point shooter at 39%.

I will have a better idea as we get closer to draft day.

Need scoring off the bench.

If no good scorers are available take Ty Jerome and hope he can be our Jalen Brunson.

I'll have to look at Mann, don't know him other than having heard the name.

Ty Jerome and Jordan Poole all-around players who make good decisions I've heard just thinking about the smart players the Warriors look for, but limited athletes.

I think they should be looking at the best player available when they are on the clock, and not looking to fill a hole since whoever they get is likely to only be a fringe minutes player regardless. Have to plan for 2 years from now.

A couple of three point shot makers that may go undrafted:

Fletcher MgGee - 6'4" made the most 3s in college history. Plays the game almost identical to JJ Redick. Constantly moving and coming off screen action.

Kyle Guy - 6'2" The guy is fearless when taking big shots. He's great with his movent and works much like Steph and Klay do off the ball.
He competes defensively, but I'm the NBA he will struggle with the size and strength of guys night in and night out. But there is no doubt he's fearless when making big plays and shots.

I really like Jerome and he's got good height for a point gaurd. Not a volume scorer, but can score in a lot of different ways. Not a big time athlete, but he understands stop and start to get his separation.

I think he gets picked before we can grab him.

He put the clamps down on Ja Morant in the Tourney and sent him packing.

So that tells you that at 6'7" he can guard super quick point guards. He can also guard the smaller power forwards, so he checks the versatility box.

Another possible undrafted big man is Jessie Govan who I pimped earlier in the year.

Really good size who's body reminded me of a young Alonzo Mourning. Can score inside and out to 3. Decent defender and good rebounder. Good passer too.

The issue for me was it's hard to guage his team because he played with some of the worst guards I've seen at a big time school. They were beyond crap and erratic. So often Govan wouldn't see the ball because of poor shots taken by those guards. For an undrafted, he'd make the team for sure.

Others I like

Cam Johnson reminds me of Harrison Barnes, older guy at 23, but the team said they wanted experienced players and he fits.

Kevin Porter is a poor mans James Harden, and many teams supposedly have him off their draft board entirely. The Warriors minor issues with Bell may make them shy away from Porter.

Talen Horton-Tucker I can't help but like him, decent all around game, too short, too fat, too slow, but he plays hard and with confidence, and he's one of those players who wins. But super young and raw and will take time to develop.

Dylan Windler took Belmont to a tourney win, shooter, team player, lefty.

Bruno Fernando the Warriors need rebounding and a physical post if Boogie leaves. Bruno looks for contact and plays HARD and smart. I could see Draymond loving him.

Dedric Lawson hustle, decent offensive and defensive game.

Louis King, super athletic 6'9" SF/PF, may not quite fall to the Warriors.

Killian Tillie reminds me of Domantas Sabonis but with a better shot.

2 picks this year and I hope the Warriors can buy one, but I bet they can't. The Hornets have 3 2nd round picks and are always looking for money so they are a possible partner. The Sixers have 5 2nd round picks, but I suspect they are going to be looking to use them to trade for a player ... but with all the free agents they have they may be desperate for some money too, and I'd love to get one of their first two 2nd round picks.

A three-and-D guy with length.

Thought they had something with McCaw, but that stalled out. Not that he was three and D, but thought they had something with Jordan Bell and that looks like it's stalled out. Hopefully they've got something with McKinnie. Gotta be able to play D at the NBA level.

Let's grab Kris Wilkes and Jaylen Hands from UCLA in the 1st and 2nd rounds respectively.

Double amputee actually but you can't find a better feel good story in the 2nd round.

How about Luguentz Dort from AZ St? Has a serious NBA frame already and plays with real ferocity.

Nooooooooooo.....I watched this kid quite a few and didn't like the shots he takes. Ineffeicient and you come away thinking he should do more. He's got a strong body, and I think some will translate that into being good.

There is no position that the Warriors should not draft. Very late first round picks don't normally contribute as rookies and half of the time they fail to become rotation players.

There is a good chance that KD still won't know what he is going to do by draft day.
One more year for Iguodala as a rotation player. Looney is our undersized center who can play power forward. Klay could play small forward. Curry already has defended off guards when Klay was defending point guards and as long as the Warriors have shot blocking I am not afraid of Curry getting posted up. It is OK to draft a point guard. If the point guard ends up deserving minutes then Curry can take some off guard minutes. Same with drafting an off guard, Klay can take small forward minutes.

McKinnie is a keeper. I hope the Warriors can keep him for the next 6 years. He shouldn't be a starter but he is fine for 15 minutes a game.

Power forward is the Warriors deepest position because Bell isn't a proven failure yet, Looney can play power forward, KD can play power forward if he comes back, and bring Jerebko back is OK if he is cheap and is willing to sit on the bench. So maybe don't draft a power forward.

Jones gets one more year to show that he can play but I would be OK drafting another mobile shot blocker project.
Warrioris might have a use for a big strong center as an option to play because Looney and Jones can get pushed arround by Stevie Adams and a few other guys. That big strong center proble should not be a rookie. Find somebody on the scrap heap for that role.

High upside Project center or high upside project any position makes sense. I don't see the point of drafting a rookie to fill a spot in the rotation during the rookie's first 2 years. Hopefully the drafted player can fill a spot in the rotation in his 3rd year.

If the Warriors sign McKinnie to a longer contract and then draft a small forward and then KD decides to come back, no problem just trade McKinnie or the rookie.

Take the best player available regardless of position or role.

Like Evans and McCaw?
Is a late draft pick rookie going to be better than McKinnie?

I am all forward some 6' 4" guy with really quick feet and hands that could be hopefully after a few years could be turned into a stopper at point guard and off guard. 6' 4 is big enough. Livingston's 6' 7" is not needed. We have Klay if we want to go big. I am more concerned about the lack of blazing quickness on the roster.

So what you're saying is that poor Festus effectively has neither hands nor knees?
