Scientists reveal 1 million species at risk of extinction in damning UN report



Human society is in jeopardy from the accelerating decline of the Earth’s natural life-support systems, the world’s leading scientists have warned, as they announced the results of the most thorough planetary health check ever undertaken.

From coral reefs flickering out beneath the oceans to rainforests desiccating into savannahs, nature is being destroyed at a rate tens to hundreds of times higher than the average over the past 10m years, according to the UN global assessment report.

The biomass of wild mammals has fallen by 82%, natural ecosystems have lost about half their area and a million species are at risk of extinction – all largely as a result of human actions, said the study, compiled over three years by more than 450 scientists and diplomats.

“The health of the ecosystems on which we and other species depend is deteriorating more rapidly than ever,” said Robert Watson, the chair of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (Ibpes). “We have lost time. We must act now.”

Agriculture and fishing are the primary causes of the deterioration. Food production has increased dramatically since the 1970s, which has helped feed a growing global population and generated jobs and economic growth. But this has come at a high cost. The meat industry has a particularly heavy impact. Grazing areas for cattle account for about 25% of the world’s ice-free land and more than 18% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Crop production uses 12% of land and creates less than 7% of emissions.

Problem is - her conclusions put together don't make sense. How do you strongly conclude to not impeach Trump and at the same strongly conclude to impeach his new fixer?

Because it might be politically possible to impeach the AG but it isn't for the President. I pointed out before the election that the President wasn't immune from prosecution in so many words but was still way more protected than anything and suggested that a large part of the appeal of the job to Trump was that very reality and I recall a lot of people suggesting I was wrong on several fronts. It sure looks to me like he had a grasp of that reality from the start.

The interesting thing about impeaching Barr is, if successful, it starts opening up a bit of a potential platform on which to go after Trump. It may not succeed or even be a politically desirable move but if the goal were to impeach Trump, it would almost have to begin with impeaching Barr.

What's sad is the way all those predictions of his being a grifter were and
still are broadly dismissed without any foundation for dismissing them.
In a similar vein, 46% of voters ignored the experts ie the people
who report news for a living when 98% of those experts said don't
elect this guy. His supporters don't want this stuff to be true but
they won't apply any rigor in attempting to disprove it.

Exclusive: China backtracked on nearly all aspects of U.S. trade deal - sources



The diplomatic cable from Beijing arrived in Washington late on Friday night, with systematic edits to a nearly 150-page draft trade agreement that would blow up months of negotiations between the world's two largest economies, according to three U.S. government sources and three private sector sources briefed on the talks.

The document was riddled with reversals by China that undermined core U.S. demands, the sources told Reuters.

In each of the seven chapters of the draft trade deal, China had deleted its commitments to change laws to resolve core complaints that caused the United States to launch a trade war: theft of U.S. intellectual property and trade secrets; forced technology transfers; competition policy; access to financial services; and currency manipulation.

U.S. President Donald Trump responded in a tweet on Sunday vowing to raise tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods from 10 to 25 percent on Friday...The administration said the latest tariff escalation would take effect at 12:01 a.m. Friday, hiking levees on Chinese products such as internet modems and routers, printed circuit boards, vacuum cleaners and furniture.

The rapid deterioration of negotiations rattled global stock markets, bonds and commodities this week. Until Sunday, markets had priced in the expectation that officials from the two countries were close to striking a deal.

I think it's very dangerous for black people to repeat white supremacist talking points because of financial gain. At first, I thought it was funny, but now the conservatives are bringing these grifters in front of congress to testify on their bull. It's one thing to grift the idiotic public; it's another if they're getting to the level of affecting policies.

Charlie Munger: Trump is not primarily responsible for US economic success



President Donald Trump is not primarily responsible for U.S. economic success, says Charlie Munger, the right-hand man of Berkshire Hathaway (BRK-A, BRK-B) CEO Warren Buffett.

“I think [Trump] deserves some credit, but a lot of it just happened,” says Munger, 95, in his first interview after the Berkshire Hathaway Shareholders Meeting.

The U.S. has been awash with positive economic news in recent weeks.

Munger, a Republican, said the strong economic performance resulted largely from the natural economic cycle and the decisions of Trump’s predecessors in the White House.
