And we would have won 30 had Bembry and Prince not been so vindictive. The fake "OH MY GOD WE ARE GOING TO WIN" after the fake Prince 3 (which would have never been possible from so far, but happened just as a prelude), followed by the "OH MY GOD HOW COULD HE DO THAT?" after the Bembry foul and the proceeding 3 FTs to lose the game.

538 had us at 28 wins, spot on.

And a half dozen or more I read pre-season had us winning fewer games than last year, way off.

I am pretty sure ESPN had us as the worse team in the league. We beat this seasons worse team by 12 wins.

After the foul the camera went right over to Pierce, his lips were easy to read "why why why". I don't think anyone wanted to lose that game.

CLP stated on 92.9FM they all VERY much wanted 30 wins. As did I, we had it in the bag. Let’s not forget Collins missed 20% of the season, would’ve likely reached 35+ wins had he played those 15 games. Hawks are making playoffs next year, just 3rd year of the rebuild. The bb draft gods decide to finally shine on us and gift us Zion, don’t think someone like Kawhi wouldn’t sign here.

Young/Huerter/Kawhi/Zion/Collins HOT-domighty!

I predicted 8-12. Ugh ...can we please not do any more of these huge trades where I have to add the Mavs to my YouTube tv then root against them then for them...it’s hard.

8-12 sounds right...just sayin..also, not watching Mavs is pretty awesome!

ATL Boy wrote:Complete buzzkill to have the pick drop two spots with no real trade off happening in our favor. If nothing else, that 9th pick (assuming it lands at 9) will be very valuable ammunition in case the lotto balls don't bounce in our favor and Schelnk wants to trade up from our pick.

That is my feeling too. Doesn't mean the pick won't turn out great or have trade value but we lost two spots of value if we keep that pick and even lost value on the Charlotte 2nd rounder.

If all that bad luck combined with our non-existent history of picking #1 overall is just a prelude to us getting lucky and landing #1 in the lottery, however, then I'm all good.

Mavericks' draft lottery history: Luka Doncic-Trae Young deal in 2018 may have finally turned Dallas' luck around

With the overnight success of rookie sensation Luka Doncic, the Mavericks briefly entertained thoughts of making a run for the 2018-19 postseason. But, alas, those dreams were short-lived after a series of roster-reshaping moves at the trade deadline.

So for the third straight year, the Mavericks find themselves in the NBA lottery. This time around the excitement is muted, however, because odds are Dallas will forfeit its pick to Atlanta per the agreement of its draft-day trade for Doncic.

The Mavericks shipped No. 5 pick Trae Young and a protected first-round selection in 2019 to Atlanta for Doncic. If the Mavericks exit the lottery with a pick anywhere outside of the top five, the selection goes to the Hawks.

Spoiler:
The Mavericks knew for some time that Doncic was their guy in the 2018 draft, but when Dallas slipped from third to fifth in the lottery, it became clear they were going to have to make a move. As Atlanta went on the clock with the third pick, Dallas officials gave them a call. Dallas needed a do-it-all offensive player such as Doncic. The Mavericks had lacked playmaking, shooting, and size in the backcourt, all of which Doncic provided.

While it's too early to say how this trade ultimately will be judged, it's safe to say both the Mavericks and Hawks are happy with their choices. Doncic and Young likely will finish first and second, respectively, in the NBA Rookie of the Year voting, and both have bright futures with their franchises.

Dallas likely will lose its first-round selection to Atlanta this year, but that is the price of doing business in today's NBA. While the chances are slim, Dallas does have a 26% chance of retaining its pick.

Near worst case scenario. Time for Schlenk to go mining for gold in shallow waters with this pick.

You guys realize how big of a bullet we just dodged, right?

Three teams went 33-49 this year. Two of them jumped 6 spots in the lottery.

The other 33-49 team fell to #10.

We're fortunate Mavericks lost that tiebreaker...

I’m not sure we wouldn’t rather have a later lottery pick next year than this year.

If the Mavs had added Zion to Luka and Kristaps, the pick likely would have been worse in the future.

Didn't happen. We have pick #10. It's up to Schlenk to make the most of it and I don't have to care about Mavs pick watch anymore.

We'll be getting 2 2nds from the Cavs now.

That isn’t the most likely scenario and certainly not the one I’d pick if given a choice. But a #16 pick next year may we’ll be better than the #10 pick this year.

Which is why I crapped on that Cavs trade at the time it was made. It was either going to be a very late first if LeBron stayed or wasn’t going to convey and would become a much less valuable 2nd round combo package If he left.

Unfortunate.

A late first for Korver at that point would have been great. I think it was worth the gamble. Especially since Cleveland's 2nds likely won't be far from the first round.

This!!! They flip flop with Grizz and end up with the 2nd pick...or worse. We dodged a bullet for sure. No, I’m good with 2 top 10 picks.

No more watching L... and the Mavs. That’s the best part of it!
