Can he force his way off the Pelicans?

Is it possible for him to put pressure on the Pels to trade him to NY?

There are a limited number of things he could do.

1. Return to Duke for a season. Downsides to this are that he loses $10m in income from an NBA contract plus however much more in endorsements then likely ends up in Phoenix next season. And that's if he doesn't suffer an injury.

2. Sit at home doing nothing for a year. Downsides are mostly the same as returning to Duke but with fewer injury concerns.

3. Play overseas. He doesn't have to play in NOLA... BUT NOLA still owns his NBA rights and he will be limited in how much he can ever make if he can't play in the most lucrative basketball league in the world.

Option 4 of "sign the damn contract and play out your four years" seems a lot better than giving up a ton of money only to end up back in New Orleans or someplace worse like Phoenix.

What kind of leverage does he have? He could say I'll play in China, but NO will still always have his rights. No one can force him to sign a contract with NO. Of course, then he won't play in the NBA.

It is possible but is it worth it for him?

Eli Manning did it and got traded to the Giants.

So if he doesn't want to play for a sub-par team in front of a small-market fanbase, the solution is to go overseas and play for an even worse team in an even smaller market?

You'd play on a team coached by Monty Williams, run by James Jones and Jeff Bower, and owned by Robert Sarver?

It's like a place players' careers go to die these days.

Eli bluffed and San Diego folded.

San Diego could have called his bluff and Eli would have played there, but getting Rivers, Merriman, and a few other prospects for Eli paid off well for them.

Want a case where someone pulled this off and wasn't bluffing? Try Bo Jackson or John Elway. Bo went to baseball as his primary sport while Elway had the leverage of being drafted by the Yankees to threaten the Colts with.

Players around the league absolutely love Monty Williams... another typical unresearched post.

Great guy, crap head coach. You are talking to someone who watched him coach in New Orleans for years.

If he is being managed correctly, it is obvious that;
- far too much money to pass up, not only his rookie deal but he gets to the 2nd deal quicker
- the Pels will develop him just fine
- there is still a lottery in place for next year
- you can always be a quitter like AD and demand a trade later.....it’s pretty socially acceptable in the NBA

Other than going back to Duke, he can't do a thing. It's not like MLB or the NFL where a team loses a draft pick's rights after a certain amount of time.

Under NBA rules, the the draft rights to any player belong to the team "forever" if he never enters the league. The Orlando Magic still have the rights to Fran Vazquez all the way back from 2005, LOL. If Vazquez somehow wanted to play in the NBA tomorrow, the Magic would own his rookie contract rights.

Going back to Duke doesn't make sense. Are the Knicks or Lakers assured of getting the #1 pick in 2020? Far from it. It'll probably be another small market team that wouldn't excite him anymore than the Pels right now.
Brian Geltzeiler: You see Mark Jackson getting a head coaching job as early as next year?

Adrian Wojnarowski: Not if people make calls on him. Not if an organization is doing their homework and knows all the things he brings with him.

I am already sick media will push him to lakers or knicks for as long as he plays for the pelicans. Why are we even creating stories that he doesnt wanna play for the pelicans? Or is it being made way for the possibility pelicans will be relocated to seattle or las vegas?

Next year what team will he magically get drafted by? The Lakers with LBJ can make the playoffs obviously. The Clippers even without Leonard can make the playoffs. If the Knicks sign Kevin Durant then they're out of the lotto. So like, where are these magical big markets or well ran franchises in position to take him - what, he has a (at best) 14% chance of going to Chicago (which is poorly ran anyway?).

Pointless.

You think he doesn't want to go to NOLA because he doesn't like the housing or something? The Suns are the worst ran franchise in the league, so it would be worse or a lateral movement at best...

anyway this is a non story, he's going to play for the pelicans. media is just clamoring to a story and trying their best to influence zion.

which player ever said no to $10m to go back to being told it's illegal to take $10 because he's an amateur?

I actually kind of agree with this. He has one of the most NBA-ready bodies I've ever seen, but he's still a really raw player in terms of skillset. He has a high upside, but it's going to take him 3 or 4 seasons to reach, if he ever does.

That said, he could force himself to another team if he wanted based just off of hype and expectations.

How many people would give anything in this **** world to be him right now? People working **** jobs barely scraping by to survive. How **** frustrating is it to watch people turn down Millions upon millions of dollars at 19 years old. Do you love playing the game of basketball? If so why does it **** matter if you play for the Pelicans? You're getting paid millions to play a sport..yet people say he should be mad? About what exactly? Having the world at his feet?

I dont understand this...at all. And if the dude has any legit friends they would tell him to quit acting up and tell him to just go play and be set for life for him and his family.

I mean the most likely path is that he softly makes it known he doesn't want to play. I don't think he goes as far as pulling a Francis or Eli.

I think more likely he refuses to work out for the Pelicans and Grizzlies and instead works out for the Knicks and Lakers. Obviously the Pelicans will take him but he lets them know he is far from happy about it. Luckily they have Gentry who will probably make him feel welcome there immediately. Horrible contracts aside, they could also make some trades that get them some talent around him to build for the future.

Its not an ideal start, sure, when the player you're drafting doesn't want to be there but they can win him over (just like every other draftee will be won over, by playing with professionals in a good system, or at least better than the NCAA).
