theGreatRC wrote:Just a reminder, Ryan had 0 games with Cov in the lineup, Teague, Rose & Tyus were ALL injured at a point in the season to where we had Bayless starting (and playing well) with Terell as backup.
We also had Cam Reynolds Josh Okogie & KBD playing rotation minutes (3 rookies & one of them being straight from d league mid season.)
We also had Wigg or KAT out for a few games during Ryan's gig as well. (not much, but games missed are games missed)
Ryan also incorporated Loul Deng as a key rotation player after him literally being benched by the Lakers & Wolves for almost 1 1/2 seasons.
Ryan was thrust into this position suddenly and we are judging him based on what he had to do with no preparation that a head coach normally gets an off season & training camp to do.
I get that Ryan didn't have a good chance to put up a winning record with all the injuries. So we don't know whether he would have done a good job or not based on his interim tenure. So without having that I go off of his credentials as an assistant coach who never made lead and seldom worked with a winning team. The other candidates all had much better assistant resumes.

Who do you think could get this team turned around with the crap talent and contracts on here?
Bet not even Pop could get more than 30 wins out of what is coming back. IMHO.
Making excuses for him already. The Wolves if they stay healthy have plenty of talent to make the playoffs and it will be an indictment against Saunders if we don't.

I'd rather be a year or two early on a coaching hire than a year or two late

It really depends on how the offseason goes. There's a few rotation players who might not be back.
As you say, Gibson and Rose won´t probably be back. But with the game focusing on Towns, with a short leash on Wiggins, with Covington playing from game 1, with logic rotations... I see a better, no toxic, fun to watch team. I might be wrong, devastating injuries could happen, etc. But there´s talent on the team. A good coach is what´s needed.
Hopefully one day we will get one. Hopefully it's Ryan Saunders. I have seen nothing to indicate to me that Saunders will ever be a good head coach, but it could happen.

Last season was a tough one to judge Ryan due to all the injuries team had..RoCo also never played under him. Defense & 4th Quarter offense is the biggest problem of the team...If he is able to improve the team defense to atleast above average, then that should be a win for him.

Re: The search for a new coach
I've never said that Ryan couldn't be a good coach. I've always said I see nothing to indicate he will be one. My stance hasn't changed one iota. I don't favor hiring anybody for our head coach that has given no indication he will be good.Klomp wrote:KGdaBom wrote:Hopefully one day we will get one. Hopefully it's Ryan Saunders. We are about five successful lead assistant years early on Saunders.

Little early ... little late ... who knows maybe it's just the right time. Wins and losses will be the end game as always.
general points ....
First, safe to assume Gersson did not find a substantially better up and coming option.
Second, Gersson sees Saunders as low risk option he could potentially groom and develop.
Third, Saunders has demonstrated he has the ability to earn players respect - huge.
Fourth, Saunders is very analytical and that's a trait Gersson likes.
Fifth, Saunders has proven himself a competent professional within and outside the orgaization.
Time will tell,

Re: The search for a new coach results in Ryan Saunders (pg 11)
Players better show up and support their guy. I also want to see the team come together at some point this summer and try to build towards being better.
The west as of right now is in a funny spot. It's ultra competitive but only one team is head and shoulders elite. It's like there is one A+ team and then 8-10 teams are B+'s. Wolves could be a B+ team if everything falls right and we build an identity. There us a chance we could be a 3-8th seed if we play our cards right. Lets hope that's the kind of season we build towards this summer. I better see some wolves at summer league,

I think to this point, Saric and Dieng are the only guys under contract who haven't been in town. Pretty good percentage when we're only a month after our season ended.

Calinks wrote:I feel like the power that be strongly wanted Ryan to get the job and Rosas' hands were tied. He probably wants his own coach appointed but didn't want to ruffle feathers right away. My guess is he will take Ryan on and if things go poorly, Ryan is out there door with a short leash. That way Rosas can say "Hey, we tried it your way." to Glenn and and the players while still bringing in his own guy within the first 18 months of his new job.
The biggest downside to this is that we could spend another season with a coach that isn't right for us and we will have to bring in yet another coach for guys like KAT who have had a carousel already. It is what it is.
I don't think it was Glen, since every available source refutes that idea, but I do think you're right that Rosas probably didn't want to rock the boat too much. Everyone apparently loves Ryan after all.
The other thing is that the two of them apparently have a long standing relationship already so, given Ryan's seen as a modern coach, it's not farfetched that Rosas would go for someone he's comfortable with who also already shares his vision for how the team should operate.

As long as we have a solid competent coach it's all good. Thibs may have been the stupidest most inflexible idiot of a coach I've ever seen. Thibs never once pondered the possibility of making a lineup adjustment EVER.
