Going to see 'Booksmart' tonight. Haven't been on a date night movie with my wife in ages. Excited. Will report back.

Hopefully it won’t take away too much from your experience. Another poster here mentioned there was a podcast with the creator of the show and I listened. He explains his rationale about not using Russian accents.

Some big differences, but Dexter is an amazing writer, and his life is quite a story in and of itself: https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/vdzdv9/pete-dexter-276-v16n12

I'm part of the scant demographic that's a fan of Pete Dexter, yet did not know his role with "Deadwood." That interview is great and I cannot recommend reading his work on boxing enough. The Stacks, one of the verticals on Deadspin, ran his series of pieces on heavyweight contender/legendary character actor Randall "Tex" Cobb and his fight with Larry Holmes and hoo boy. One of those barefisted writers you lump in along with Royko, Terkel and Breslin.

Wow you nailed it, absolutely. There just aren't any writers like him these days anymore, novel-wise and certainly writing for newspapers. Those Cobb/Holmes articles are fantastic, did you read "Spooner?" He incorporates the Cobb/Philadelphia incident into the story.

I also thought this was a sad and poignant look at the current struggles of David Milch as the Deadwood movie comes out tonight: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2019/05/27/david-milchs-third-act

"Spooner" is GREAT. Alas, "Tuesdays with Morrie" probably sold a bajillion copies more. Pete don't traffic in the sepia band of the color spectrum.

Yeah, HBO has an official podcast with the creator that is a great follow up for each ep. Basically summed it up as they didn't want cliched accents to take away from the performances. Since its also a Sky production, with a british cast and crew, they wanted to at minimum keep it consistent (i.e. no americans).

A lot harder to do pull off a russian accent and language than spanish with Narcos for example.

Always Be My Maybe is a solid paint by the numbers rom-com elevated by about 15 minutes of Keanu Reeves playing himself.

I enjoyed the Deadwood movie well enough. Good to see virtually the whole cast back. But it still ticks me off that Milch walked away after 3 seasons and made us wait 13 years to wrap up some of the storylines.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

It reminded me of Bill Murray in Zombieland, except I think Keanu is even better.

Watched this tonight with the GF, I thought it was pretty good!

Keanu was hilarious. It was your average rom-com plot wise, but I thought it had a little more charm than most.

Has anyone watched “Dark” on Netflix, and if so, how would you compare it to Stranger Things?

Yes and I loved it. Much, uh, "darker" than Stranger Things. Really not a lot of comedic relief at all. I watched it with subtitles and even though I know a little bit of German it was pretty hard to follow at times for reasons I won't get into due to spoilers. Others have watched with English voices dubbed in and probably had an easier time of it but to me that lessens the experience a little. I don't think it's really comparable to Stranger Things other than the fact that weird stuff starts happening in a small town. I'm guessing that comparison came about because it was released during the height of Stranger Things popularity and it was sci fi and had a few kids in it.

If you want a sense of the creator's style, there's a movie he made about 8 years ago called The Silence that's excellent as well.
At a party given by a billionaire, Kurt Vonnegut informs Joseph Heller that their host had made more money in a single day than Heller had earned from his novel Catch-22.

Heller responds, “Yes, but I have something he will never have — ENOUGH.”

The creative people behind the show don't speak Russian. I can't imagine trying to create a show in a language you don't understand. If you replace the creative team, you are talking about a completely different show.

You guys are giving me reasons, and that's fine, but I'm just telling you that I find it awkward to watch as I think it inhibits the authenticity of the viewing experience for me. That doesn't have anything to do with the rationale for doing so - which makes sense to me.

Anyway, I'm caught up and it's really visceral. I found myself getting queasy watching some of those scenes. Also, Stellan Skarsgård is amazing.

Yep, I got through one episode and couldn't handle any more this weekend. So sad for our democracy knowing what's coming (vis-a-vis the ads in the paper).

It was originally advertised as being similar to Stranger Things but it really isn’t at all. I love both shows but they really aren’t very alike in my opinion.

I do highly recommend it if you’re into shows that you’re trying to piece together like a puzzle the whole time.

If you do watch, you’ll probably want to have a list of character names with you...it was very difficult for me to remember names with that show and it’s very important.

This happens more often than people realize. Look at so many shows that talk about Roman times, all English accents.

It seems any time 'foreign' people need to be represented, it's actors with English accents
