I Know What They Should Do This Summer 2019: Dallas Mavericks

Post#1 » by loserX » Thu Jun 6, 2019 5:43 pm

We've had some success and interest in these threads in the past, so figured we'd revive them for this year's lottery teams to start!

How would you handle the Dallas Mavericks' offseason?

Front office changes, June draft, July free agency, and trades throughout...it's all on the table!

Current salary:
Tim Hardaway Jr.....18,150,000.....18,975,000 (PO)
Courtney Lee.........12,759,670
Dwight Powell.........10,259,375.....extension?
Luka Doncic........... 7,683,660..... 8,049,360 (TO).....10,174,391 (TO)
Justin Jackson....... 3,280,920..... 5,029,650
Jalen Brunson........ 1,416,582..... 1,663,861.....1,802,057 (ung)
Ryan Broekhoff....... 1,443,842 (ung)

Free agents: Kristaps Porzingis, JJ Barea, Devin Harris, Trey Burke, Dorian Finney-Smith, Maxi Kleber
Total of above for 2019-20: $65,253,124
2019 projected cap: $109,000,000

That leaves the Mavericks with a little under $44M in cap room. Note that Porzingis is almost certain to be maxed or close to it; his cap hold is about $17M, and his max is about $27M in Year 1. So actual available cap room will be a good chunk less than $44M. There are also roster spots to fill.

Draft
The Mavericks have #39 in the second round.

They also owe their 2021 and 2023 first rounders, have GSW/Houston's 2nd in 2020 but not their own, and a future 2023 2nd from Miami.

Some possible questions to consider:
1) Dallas Stars: The team had a crazy year in 2018-19; they said good-bye to a legend, but also completely reinvented the franchise with two trades for young studs in Doncic and KP. Now the rest of the job begins: how do the Mavs best build around the new faces? Even with KP re-upped, they'll still have a near-max slot available, and since they have few assets left they can trade at this point, FA may be the best way to add talent. Do they go all in for a 3rd star? Take on bad salary to re-stock some picks? If that doesn't work, what kinds of complementary players should they pursue? (Obligatory "MAX OUT BAREA" reference for Chuck.)
2) Big D?: Porzingis has good shot-blocking instincts, and Courtney Lee is cagey, but one is still learning and the other is not a big-minute contributor any more. There simply isn't much reliable defense currently on the roster and as a result, this team is going to have issues getting stops. How should that affect their team-building?

How would you shape the new-look Mavs?

Of course as soon as I hit "post", new details come out about Powell  Updating OP to reflect reported opt-in/extension.

Target Jimmy Butler, Kemba Walker, and Kris Middleton in that order.

If that fails go for Patrick Beverly + Danny Green + Dedmon on 2 year over pay deals. Draft BPA at 39. Retain DFS after on a 2 year overpay or 4 year value contract.

Line everything up for 2021

Obviously if they can sign Kemba or Midds they should do that. If that doesn't happen call Beverly. Depending on how things shake out they might be able to pull off a Lee for TT trade if the Cavs re-enter the tax using JR's contract. They'll have their pick next summer so they can move THjr.

I think they own the 37th pick, not the 39th that should be Pelicans pick.

I don't mean dump, I mean upgrade. I don't see a realistic path for them to move him this summer.

Meh, I was super high on the Kemba-thing but it looks like he's staying in Charlotte. I doubt we can get Middleton and I don't want Brogdon. His RFA status + durability-concerns make me shy away from him.

I'd target Tobias Harris. He's the best wing player that could be available to us right now (the Mavs don't want Butler according to reliable local reports).

Can't say I'm overly excited about the Dwight Powell-news but the Mavs apparently always want to have an overpaid culture-guy on the payroll. We don't know the numbers of the extension yet but I fully expect them to be more what some capable backup bigs will get this summer. The C-market is brutal these days for players but we aren't one of those teams that are interested in using that advantage. Powell probably won't be a horrible contract though I hope.

Cuban wont punt the cap space because that 2021 pick is unprotected, so they have to go all-in this offseason IMO. Here is what I would do:

1) Hope that Dwight Powell did the opt-out to get more years in return for a salary that is slightly lower than his 10M would have been. Maybe around 8M starting?

2) Overpay Patrick Beverly for two seasons. Something like 2/30M. Ideally he takes an under-the-market deal to resign in 2021 after falling in love with playing alongside Doncic / Zinger.

3) Finally, the move that most Mavs fans hate, offer Julius Randle a long term deal. His offense is a great fit stacked between Doncic and Zinger, his rebounding is an ideal fit next to Zinger and he is developing a 3PT shot. The kid is tough and still finding his way in this league. The one issue is defense, but I tend to believe he will improve. His age fits right into this team as well.

It gets tricky here, but I would attempt to lure him with a tremendously over sized two year deal. Think like 2/45M.

4) Offer Tim Hardaway Jr and Courtney Lee to Charlotte for Nicolas Batum and some future R2 picks. I have been on the Batum to Dallas wagon for quite some time. He just fits so well as a utility, 3/D, low usage guy IMO.

5) With remaining cap space, offer Maxi Kleber a 2 year deal. I am unsure how much, if any, space they would have left. If this doesn't work, target another backup like Ed Davis to compliment Zinger.

5) Resign DFS to Over-the Cap MLE for 2 years. Resign JJ Barea to Vet Min for one year.

6) Draft big man Moses Brown at #39 with the hopes that he can develop into a defensive compliment to Zinger, and if not he can slide into the block-specialist and high foul rate role of Salah.

PG - Pat Beverly / Jalen Brunson / JJ Barea
SG - Nicolas Batum / Justin Jackson
SF - Luka Doncic / Dorian Finney-Smith / Ryan Broekhoff
PF - Julius Randle / Dwight Powell
C - Kristaps Porzingis / Maxi Kleber / Moses Brown

Its not adding any superstars, but its a better team with better defense. You hope that JJ can become the bench scorer needed and that Randle keeps developing his game to prove a reliable part of a winning big-3. But, at the same time, everything can be aborted in two years if a truly elite talent becomes available and wants to play with the, hopefully by then, rising playoff tested talents of Doncic and Zinger.

probably both lol

Still probably room for another guard with Barea potentially not being ready to go to start the season and Devin Harris always have trouble making it through a season healthy.

I'd probably not make that deal not because I don't like Yogi or think there is bad blood because he reneged on an agreement with the team, but rather I don't want to cut into cap space like that prior to the draft.

If they start the offseason with (players in parentheses are RFA with cap holds) :

Doncic/Brunson
Lee/Hardway Jr
Jackson
(Prozingis)/(Kleber)
Powell

The Mavs would have $30 million in cap space. If I wanted to go all-in and attempt to find the third star for this group the guy I'd go all out for would be Jimmy Butler. I think he'd pair fantastically with Luke and Kristaps.

But "Sign great free agent" isn't much of a plan. So if I were to use this cap space to build a decent team around these two stars, I'd target younger players that compliment my stars and could be tradeable assets in the future along with picks and a future expiring contract like Hardway Jr.

Austin Rivers - 2 years $8m ($4M in year 1, $4M in year 2): I made a thread way back when Rivers was still in Washington that I thought he'd fit well in Dallas alongside Luka. He ended up getting bought out and playing in Houston alongside Harden which I think is a decent preview of how he'd play alongside Luka. Guarding point guards, playing off the ball, secondary creator.

Rodney Hood - 2 years $26M ($13M per year): It may be hard to get Hood to sign a 2-year deal but I think if you overpay him you can make it happen

After this, I'd look to find a younger big man to add alongside KP in the frontcourt and there's a number of young players there I like that I think Dallas could pry away from their existing teams. They are, in order:

Thomas Bryant - only 22 years old and played pretty well in Washington this past year. We all know the cap situation in Washington and I think the Mavs could leverage that to sign Bryant. Unlike the others listed above, I'd throw years and money at Bryant to serve as a pairing upfront with KP. I'd go up to 4 years $52 million dollars.

If Washington keeps Bryant I'd be willing to make a smaller investment in Willey Cauley Stein or Richuan Holmes.

Once we've reached the cap I'd re-sign KP and Kleber. Then target vet mind guys, JJ Barrea because this is Dallas and Justin Holiday cause I think he'd fit well on the wing here.

Finishing off with + two 2nd round picks (hard to predict those):

Rivers/Brunson/Barrea
Doncic/Hardway Jr/Lee
Hood/Holiday/Jackson
KP/Kleber
Bryant/Powell

Clearly, having 17M room, the most realistic target is Randle + either Curry or Yogi. I'd try to bring in playoff tested veterans on minimum contract such as VC and Tyson. I will not extend Powell (at least until next summer. The Mavs doesn't need both Randle and Powell. The starter gets the money as simply as that. 17M is not enough to get any big name or RFA candidate. For DFS and Maxi, match offers if those are tradeable contract. If not, try out young players with good athleticism. Either undrafted or FA are fine.

So here's how I see it:

Try and trade Lee and #39 at the draft for a slightly more useful player making slightly less money and the way to make that work I think is to take back a 2 year deal. I didn't find a version I liked so we are going to move the Lee deal until after FA money is spent.

Draft BPA at 39. My idea is to draft an upperclassman with perhaps a lower ceiling but more likely to be able to contribute sooner.

Free Agency, Sign KP to a long-term deal, I'll assume he gets a max. Use the low cap holds of Kleber and DFS to bring them back after spending the other money assuming they are willing--maybe they can pry a little extra money out of Dallas in exchange. Powell gets his extension.

Strike out on the big FA's. Have a call into the Clippers ready to be the landing spot for Gallo if they hit on two guys. Failing that, look to hand out 1 or 2 year deals to role players that fit. We've seen some of the names that make sense. Let's call it Beverley and Millsap and just to put a couple names on it, but it could be others. Bring back Barea.

My trade is Lee/Jackson for Fournier. Magic gain some long-term flexibility and get a look at Jackson for a couple years. Dallas slides Fournier in between Luka and Beverly in the starting lineup.

Rotation is something like this:

KP/Powell
Millsap/Kleber
Doncic/DFS
Fournier/Brunson
Beverley/Barea

Not great unless KP and Doncic become legit stars over the next 2 years, but it should be reasonably competitive and you hope in 2021 Luka and KP will be able to draw a 3rd star.

I believe KP said he will accept the QO, I'm not sure how true that is or if he changed his mind but if he does, the time to get a max star is now. I would go hard after Kemba, he fits great here. Again this is only if KP takes the QO because they will have enough money to max a guy. If not Kemba then I'll pay big money for Tobias. The time to get a star or close to star FA is not before you have to give KP the big max. Get the star then fill in the pieces. Try to get rid of Courtney Lee, THJ is still a decent player but his contract is not so great.
Kemba/ Barea/ Brunson
Luka/ THJ
Jackson/ FA
FA/ Powell
KP/ Vet

If no star signs then I'll take Pat Bev or Collison for my 1. Sign Milsap or Randle as my 4. I also like Seth Curry for this team too.
Bev or Collison/ Barrea/ Brunson
THJ/ Curry
Luka/ vet FA
Randle or Milsap/ Powell
KP/ Vet

Kemba/ Luka/ KP is a solid big 3 and that should get them in the playoffs in the tough west. The other team seems like they're fighting for the 8th seed.

I think the taking the QO was a threat mainly to the Knicks. I suppose he could hate having been traded to Dallas and would be willing to play it out, but considering his injury history and that he really hasn't made big money yet, I'd be stunned if he played for that versus a 5 year max gtd money. Huge risk.

and Dallas could get to a max slot even with his cap hold if a real max player agreed to come here. They would have to move some money but that's readily doable.

Now Dallas did offer big money to another big man a couple years ago who turned it down and played for the QO. Worked out amazingly well for Dallas and worked out terribly for the guy who played on the QO who for the rest of his career likely won't see half the money he turned down from Dallas.

It would be a near disaster if he played for the QO considering the heavy price to acquire him, but it feels almost impossible that he will do so.

I mean I don't hate the player. He's kinda a tougher fit just due to his size. Could I really find enough minutes for he, Brunson, and Barea--especially when Luka is going to the primary PG?

So I like the shooting and the experience. Just wish he offered more flexibility.
