The Yankee payroll is over $210M (third in the league). Calling Hal or the Yankees cheap is crazy even if some of that money is paid by insurance. I know everyone wanted them to spend on Machado or Harper this offseason, but the decision to pass on them looks smart now. And I know that everyone wanted Kuechel, who was very average last year, but would definitely be an upgrade over what we have now. But paying him that $15M would probably take us out of the running for a better pitcher come the deadline. German's great start hid a lot of the weaknesses the rotation has but it also bought the Yankees a lot of time and breathing room and the ability to be patient and pick its spot. Paxton and Tanaka still seem to be about as good a 2/3 as there is in the AL right now. I get you can't rely on Severino coming back but if he does, then great, it just moves everyone down a spot. The real test will be at the deadline. Will the Yankees have the ability to go out and get a Scherzer or a Bumgarner? Two pitchers who definitely upgrade them more than Kuechel would. Is it worth signing Kuechel and sacrificing your chance at a bigger and better name? Or should the Yankees just have an unlimited budget?

Since 2000, the team with the highest payroll has won 3 total titles. 2000 Yanks, 2009 Yanks and 2018 Red Sox. Spending doesn't guarantee a championship. Still have to spend it right. Wait and see how Kuechel does and whether or not the Yankees grab someone better before you kill them. They still have a share of a lead. Considering the injuries they've suffered, it's been an amazing run so far.

Again, that's a hell of a long time for this current rotation.

Who’s spot is Keuchel taking right now?

You were saying? Sorry, but you act as if those guys are dependable and assume that they’re going to stay healthy. You would rather wait and trade prospects for guys we’re probably not gonna get instead of going after a guy that would cost us nothing in prospects or picks.

Not signing Keuchel is the dumbest thing this organization has done in a long time.

Severino and Montgomery will eventually take two of those spots whenever they come back as well.

Rotation is expendable.

German is on an innings limit and CC is on his last legs, most likely will come out of the bullpen sooner than later.

We'll have to roll with 6 starters.

Montgomery might take a spot. Probably will. Severino? My guess he doesn't pitch again this year. He might not pitch next year, needed it to recover from major arm surgery. I believe the Yanks have downplayed serious injuries before.

What’s killing the Yankees right now is the decision to re-sign JA Happ and/or trade for James Paxton over Charlie Morton and Patrick Corbin.

Folks who think Tampa is going to fade down the stretch are sadly mistake. In fact as it stands today the Rays are better positioned than anyone to win the World Series with a historic pitching staff.

Morton was only going to Tampa because his home is there. It was either the Rays or retirement.

THIS I agree with. The Paxton trade was solid, but Corbin or Morton were the guys that make a real difference.

Were we even rumored to be after Morton? I can't really remember

Still baffled as to how we skimped out on a few extra dollars for Keuchel when our rotation is a question mark.

Severino has been out all year, and nobody knows how he'll be once he gets back.
German has over performed but is clearly on the decline, and is on an innings limit.
Happ is a mess, and you have no idea what you're gonna get from him.
Tanaka is the most consistent, however still struggles with the screw up inning/long ball.
CC is a workhorse and i love him, but clearly teetering on the edge of knee amputation.
Paxton is another question mark with injury issues.
And we're using relievers to pitch occasional entire games.

How could we have thought this was good enough???
