Such a bizarre case. I actually watched a bit of the trial while flipping through channels and landing on Court TV. A former first round draft pick, son of a HOFer, basically San Diego royalty, forcibly raping homeless women in their late-50s? It's just so odd.

So what do you do? I'm not going to pretend like the Bears haven't thought of this because it's not exactly rocket science coming up with a or names you think might work but if I was hired today to take control my first kicker call would be to 44-year old Matt Bryant.

In February, it was reported that the Bucs would probably show an interest in him at some point if they needed him (their kicker from '05-'08) and Bryant felt like he could "kick three more years." I don't know about that one but my only concern there would if he wants to move him and maybe his family again. Secondly, is he healthy? He missed 3 games last year after having two 16 game seasons back-to-back.

If that didn't work out, my 2nd FA call would be to another 44-year old - Phil Dawson. Similar situation. Missed 6 games last year with a hip injury that he had for most/all of the year. Unlike Bryant, it appeared to affect his actual kicking results and he wasn't very good. Is he now healthy and does he want to keep kicking at his age and does he have to move his family and does he want to deal with that? I don't know. Note: He was good - not great - in his first year with AZ after leaving SF and played in all 16 games. How much was the hip a problem then? I don't know. I'm just saying I know he had been on the decline for two years and the hip is a thing. It's still a call I make.

Either before all of that or after that - I don't care which one - I make the obvious call to the 49ers to see what it would actually take to acquire Gould. From a performance standpoint, that's obviously your fastest and safest way to real results.

Whatever order you do all of that in - fine. Those are the only names I feel like I could get that would give me even the slightest bit of confidence outside of signing another young guy and hoping like heck you found something and you can coach a kid up into something for the short or long term.

Lastly, two things. I am sure the Bears have probably done the Gould work and either can't do it or the 49ers have made the asking price so high (so far) that it just doesn't make sense for what might be a 1 or maybe 2 year thing. It'd be foolish to think they haven't made a single phone call there. Also, they may have contacted both of those guys and have been turned down. Obviously age is a real thing for both of those guys and they've been around very long in one place that might make moving very difficult on them, especially if there's an injury situation there. I'm not going to be dumb and hold it against them that they haven't signed one of those two guys because I just don't know how realistic it is.

I intentionally left Sebastian Janikowski off because I think he's made it clear he's done for good - in part because of family - and also has battled multiple injuries at the end as well.

What would be a reasonable value for Gould in a trade? 4th rounder? More? The Bears seem to be getting increasingly desperate, but how important is the kicker ultimately? I guess a lot hinges on how they feel about Trubisky leading their offense.

Pittsburgh received: Josh Scobee (age 33)
Jacksonville received: 2016 6th-round pick (became QB Brandon Allen)

That's every notable kicker name whose been involved in a trade in the last 5 years. Scobee is probably your best comparison. Scobee hovered just inside and just outside the top 50 for best accuracy percentage in NFL history.

Robbie Gould is the 2nd most accurate kicker in NFL history and in his last 3 seasons in which he's played every game he's had accuracy %'s of 84.6%, 95.1%, and 97.1% (a career high if you eliminate his 100% season in which he only played in 10 games).

Obviously the age thing is going to be the strongest argument for not getting too ridiculous about asking for and receiving a compensation package but it's hard to predict what he could, should, and potentially would go for in a trade factoring in value, age, and positional importance.

I'm probably not the best person to ask because Gould is one of my all-time favorite kickers (The Niners have ridiculously gone on a stretch of acquiring a few of my all-time favorite kickers as guys you'd want to have) and I hold the belief that if you think you're ANYWHERE close to having a season in which you can compete, you absolutely should not and can not go in to a season without having a reliable kicker IF you already have one or one shows the interest in coming to your team. If you have one or if one wants to come on board, I'm almost always fine setting a new bench mark for kicker money if that's what you have to do for it to be necessary to work.

At the same time, I don't exactly know how difficult it will be to get Gould to come in at the end when the games are about to start. I don't exactly know what kind of feelings that will set off among teammates in this situation and how you'd have to approach that or change any of that to fit in with that side of the game. However, I would probably hold firm on keeping him even if some feelings are a little sore between both parties.

And finally, a 2nd guy I had as a draft target who I would value more than a Levine Toilolo and see if he could ascend from that roster spot from there. I have been a bigger Celek fan than most but he has a really scary concussion problem and I'm not sure he'll ever bounce back from that. That leaves Toilolo, Kaden Smith, Dwelley, and Mayfield as his roster competition behind Kittle.

Kaden is almost definitely a lock and Toilolo has the Shanahan connection but I like Roberts more if it's just me calling it. And their games are somewhat comparable if you're looking at it from the perspective of having/needing a guy that does what they both do.

Would I move on from Celek for a Michael Roberts in a one vs. one situation? Yeah, at this point I probably would if it was Celek vs. Roberts instead of Roberts vs. Toilolo.
