Knicks Never Made Formal Offer For Anthony Davis

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Mon Jun 17, 2019 4:36 am

The New York Knicks never approached the New Orleans Pelicans with a formal trade offer for Anthony Davis, an NBA official told Marc Berman of the New York Post.

Berman adds that the Knicks backed off after sensing that they could not match the Pelicans demands.

SNY reported last week that members of the Knicks organization were wary of giving away too many assets to acquire Davis, citing the team's struggles after trading for Carmelo Anthony.

Knicks did the right thing. Rebuild through the draft and acquire a star as the last piece.

Great news. If AD couldn't make the playoffs with Holiday and Randle he wasn't doing jack **** here with DSJ.

Finally some news not to be embarrassed about. Now let’s stay the course, draft rj/Morant, do not trade back and see who we can sign.

Too bad porzingis couldn’t wait another 30 seconds to see this thing thru.

Smart. Sign him in a year when he gets sick of playing with Lebron

Anthony Davis is an analytics dream - highest PER, statistical juggernaut.

However, he has never played a full season of basketball - always injury prone, never healthy.
He has also never led his team to anything meaningful in the playoffs.

To put it brief - he is not a player that you want to mortgage your entire franchises future for, especially if his agent is intent on him only signing a 1 year deal. If a team mortgages their entire future to trade for you you, the player should also step up and sign a long-term deal. By Anthony Davis insisting on a 1 year deal - he has an easy opt out should the situation with the Lakers get messy. Which means that in 2020, teams can sign him outright.

Although the off-season hype for the Knicks has so far been very disappointing -- from losing the chance to draft #1, to Durant getting injured and Kyrie leaning towards Lakers / Nets -- it was wise for the Knicks not to give up on their young core ( and #3 pick, i.e. RJ Barrett ) for a guy that is non-committal like AD.

AD signing with the Lakers is reminiscent of Carmelo being traded from the Nuggets to the Knicks - Knicks mortgage their future for Melo even though they could have signed him in the offseason (i.e. AD insisting on 1 year deal). Also Knicks may have a player with similiar skillset in Mitchell Robinson.

All in all - applaud the Knicks front office for being patient / sensible - you mortgage your future in legitimate franchise players (i.e. Kawhi, Lebron, KD ... not players who have not proved anything in the league aside from PER like AD ). Yes the hype of the free agency has died down, but the best way forward to build a franchise is continuity and investing in the building blocks.

Why is it news when the Knicks don't do something?

Lots of teams don't do things.

Shouldn't all the things they don't do get equal time?

What didn't The Memphis Grizzlies do today?

The Knicks did the right thing. THere was no reason to go all in on Davis, Davis might even be FA next year. They don't need to move assets when they can already afford to bring in 2 max deal guys. Lakers gave up like 4 first including the #4 overall. I'd be PISSED if the Knicks did that ****.

It's probably because an article last week said the Knicks were one of Davis' preferred destinations and there was a lot of speculation regarding that.

I get that, but had the Grizzlies been one of his preferred locations, and the Grizzlies didn't make an offer, I doubt their non-action would have been newsworthy.

The Grizzlies didn't attach Porzingis to create cap space. So what sense does it make to not pursue AD?

Yep, sounds like something straight out of the Knicks management playbook

I have lost complete faith in the Knicks under Dolan’s watch. It’s like they’re cursed with him as owner. I’ve never seen anything like this in my life. If he was a regular employee without all of this money, he’d be fired from every position he’d ever hold. Unbelievable. You just can’t make this stuff up. How in the freakin world do you keep ruining every single postseason AND season!?! With not a hint of success!

Normally the Knicks have been obsessed with quick fixes and win now mentality, despite rarely actually winning during those pushes. It's actually much more refreshing to see them be a little patient and build through the draft rather than trading away the farm when you need a solid base in place first.
