Post Draft Signings: Brian Bowen and JaKeenan Grant

Post#1 » by Scoot McGroot » Fri Jun 21, 2019 3:26 pm

After the draft, word has circulated that we have signed Brian Bowen, of the NBL in Australia (signed at Louisville but never played due to receiving illegal benefit payments in the Adidas scandal) to a 2 Way deal, and JaKeenan Gant of Louisiana to an Exhibit 10. An Exhibit 10 deal is essentially a training camp deal that allows us to unilaterally convert to either a 2 Way Contract, or a full roster deal.

Guess the Pacers really like Bowen. Not really a fan of him but maybe the team saw something else in him. For me, he's too one-dimensional. A five-star recruit solely because of his offensive game because he's got not much all-around game. Good scorer though, and maybe COULD have been a better playmaker. He has shown some tiny potential of court vision but is selective in using it.

Anyways, I guess a year in the pros has made him better. If he turns out to be a Nick Young without the baggage, he'd be a steal.

I think that type of potential is perfect to use the 2 way contract on.

wonder what happened to last year's 2 ways? Sumner got regular contract. was Reed the other one? is he on our summer league team? if Vic is inactive early, our 2 ways might not be Ants until later.

Reed was the other and is a restricted free agent (or rather, could be, if we extend a 2 way QO, or even a regular QO).

Summer league teams haven’t been announced yet for any team that I’ve seen.

I haven't seen roster either. I assume he'll be on it if he has a hope to return and hasn't used up his eligibility.

Everybody’s eligible. No age limits. I believe that players under two years of service can be compelled to play if they’re under contract, but there’s no age limit. Generally though, vets feel better prepared by playing against other vets in workouts and either formal (like Drew League) or informal games.

ah, I remembered there was something about 2 years but thought it might be a limit rather than a mandate. good information.

Brian Bowen is a very interesting player. Not too long ago he was a 5 star recruit. That will be a player to watch in summer league for sure. He didn't really do much in the Australian league though, but its a mens league so stats may not be a true representation.

Bowen per theAthletic might have been drafted but his agent told teams he didn't want to sign a 2-way with them preferring to drop out of the draft to sign one with us.
