Who's our 6th man?

One of these three players will be coming off the bench. Who should it be?

Brown IMO, since he can fill in at three positions and isn't needed in the starting lineup

Smart or Hayward, Brown isn't a good enough play maker to be 6th man.

Smart. He can come off the bench and be the difference maker on the 2nd unit.

Losing some key defensive guys, I think we have to start Smart. If Hayward's back to his old self, he should also start, so I say Brown.

I think Danny will get a backup PG so they can run the 2nd unit. (Rondo, Larkin, ?)

It’ll probably be Smart. I have a feeling they might want to try and trade Brown instead of signing him long term. So I think they will start him and try and keep his value up.

Voted Brown. He can get all the shots he wants on the second unit.
Smart has to start alongside Kemba esp now that we're likely starting Kanter at center.
Hayward or Kemba can rest early in the 1st/3rd so they could also spend time with the second unit.

It should be Hayward he can run an offense and play 4 positions. Neither of Brown or Smart can carry the offensive load as far as creating shots for themselves and others. That way you can have one of Hayward and Kemba on the floor at all times and Stevens can be selective with line ups and match ups and take the bulls eye off Hayward back on defense. I would be fine with him leading the team in mins played I just think there is more value all around in him coming off the bench and Brown and Smart starting.

I'm nearly convinced Hayward, Brown and Tatum all start. Then 1-2 of them stay on with the 2nd unit and you mix and match starters with bench so there isn't that much of a drop off.
Good assessment:

PLO wrote:Tatum played OK - took advantage of a few mismatches - decent on the defensive end. He is what we thought he was going into the season - a technically very proficient player operating close to his career ceiling as a rookie.

The one argument for bringing Marcus off the bench is he is actually a PG and we don't have a PG who has played on NBA games on the bench. I also think he would embrace that 6th man thing no problem.

Smart or hayward very important to start brown it doesn't matter anyway we ain't getting higher than the 7th seed and that's if everyone plays great. We're small at every position and we won't be in top 20 for defense rating. But knowing how everything that makes the most sense to me is getting reversed it will probably be brown.

It's still on Hayward to make improvements over last year. If he can't defend at a higher level than he's pretty much relegated to that role. Otherwise its a simple as trial and error see who earns the spot and who fits on the bench. Still don't see both Brown and Hayward here by the deadline.

We have enough offense on this team that I think Brown would do well as a 6th man - Edwards, Romeo and Grant are all very gifted offensive players, plus one of the holdovers from the starting line-up.

But we can't really afford to be less athletic with the starters. Badly need Jaylen's speed and relatively low-maintenance offensive game out there.

Any reason people are voting for Smart over Hayward?

To me, Smart needs to be in the starting lineup. He helps us set a tone out the gate. Sandwich him in between Kemba and Tatum and he can focus on defense and dirty work. If you make him the 6th man, you risk awakening his hero complex and bringing out the worst in him

Smart will be the one who will be most ok with it. He's team first all the way. Tell him, you have to come off the bench because the other guys might have feelings hurt over it, I bet he says ok coach.

This idea that they can't resign Brown seems a bit ridiculous to me. If he breaks out then they def have to sign him and if he has a repeat of last season I can't see teams overpaying him as badly as say Rozier.

I think for a variety of reasons Hayward makes the most sense
1. Balance. With Smarts D in the starting line up and Hayward’s scoring, ball handling and overall skill off the bench it feels like a more balanced and productive rotation
2. Brown. He is in a contract year and I think he will be most productive as a starter.
3. Rookies. It seems we will have an inexperienced second unit aside from the 6th man. Ojeleye and Theis have played but have not been key rotation cogs before. Langford and G Williams as well as R Williams should get a lot of PT and Hayward’s presence will help these kids gel

I just don't think he's as needed in the starting lineup as he was when Kyrie was here. Walker isn't a good defender but at least he doesn't take plays off like Irving. I also think Walker can be a better distributor also, I would love to see him and Brown in transistion.

It's a shame - I don't think Hayward's in a great position to rehab his value for us this year. Feel like he's going to be in the same role ET was in Portland. A better version but not the featured option he used to be.
