Donovan Mitchell 2019/20 Season Expectations:

Post#1 » by Tom349 » Sun Jul 7, 2019 2:24 am

Whats everyone expecting from Mitchell this upcoming season?

Numbers wise I think his scoring average will be around as what he had this season (24 ppg), I could see that possibly climbing up to 27 ppg but I expect most of his improvement on scoring will come from shooting with greater efficiency, with close to 40% three point shooting and a TS around 56-60%.

With no Favors and potential lack of rebounding options I could see Quin using Donovan as a way of securing the rebounds Gobert doesn't get and have him potentially play a bit like Westbrook when match ups allow it. He average 4 this past season and that could increase considerably if rebounding does become an issue for the team.

With greater scoring options and less responsibility on the offensive end it will be interesting to see whether Donovan can become the defender many expected of him out of college, would be nice to see some lockdown defense given he could be a real handful for opposition guards.

Lastly the area of his game that I think could take off is his passing, he averaged 4.2 assist this past season and with better shooting and scorers around him that number could improve to around the 6-7 assist mark per game. In particular his ability to kick out to the corner is a real strength of his passing game already and with Joe and Bogey waiting in the corner and being deadly from there that could be a real weapon for Donovan and the team. Factor in hopefully some improvement in understanding between him and Gobert in the PnR and his passing could improve considerably.

Factor in the improvements we've made to the team and Mitchell naturally improving with his full off season and going into his third season and I expect Donovan to play like an all star and in doing so make the all star team. I think worst case scenario he averages the same as he did this past season on slightly better efficiency, best case scenario he averages an extra 1-3 points, rebounds and assist a game on better efficiency.

For this team to take that next step I think we need him around the same scoring numbers as last year but we need his percentage to increase drastically. Around 45% or higher from the field and 38% or better from the 3 would be huge.

I think he'll average about the same as last season, maybe a bit less, but with better efficiency, a bit less shots, and more assists. The Jazz added some offensive talent so now he won't have to take so many shots out of necessity.

I'm going wild this time around. It might be a bit of a wishful thinking too, but he will have much more space to do his thing and a full healthy off-season to work on his game. I'm going 3d year wade type of stats. 27/5/5 or something of the sort with 58% TS%

Come on, Donovan! We need this.

26/5/4 with better efficiency (e.g., 37.5% from 3-pt). Top 10 scorer in the league.

23 / 6 / 3 Won't be asked to do as much with deeper team. But still our 4th quarter leader.

I'd echo what others have said. Don't foresee a huge jump in raw numbers if at all, but I think he'll be a much better player with a summer of training and more spacing. Better efficiency, more rebounding and defense, and better decision making overall.

I think his assist numbers are going to go up by 2-3 per game this year. I think he was already making those passes, just a lot of missed shots to finish them off. Now they will become assists.

What is he doing right now? Haven’t been very diligent.

Last year I was a little critical of his seeming lack of priorities. It’s clear the kid does work but I wanted a little more than what went on. Hopefully we will see some new wrinkles to his game. Better D, better decisions, get that floater, etc.

Just based on personnel there should be a lot more efficiency. More assisted shots & more assists. Better %

Seems to have been working with his trainer in New York too:

Also, was at Spider-man's premiere:

And his shoe dropped so it seems like he's gonna have a tour to promote it:

23/5/4 on 44/37/80 shooting, but moving from 5 FTA to 6 or more.

I’m too lazy to do it...

But take the last 2/3rds of last years stats (I would say the last half but our schedule was too easy), take the efficiency up by about 7.5%, then bring the usage down about 7.5%, and that’s what I think he will average.

Either of those numbers I think could be in the 5%-10% range, so an average of 7.5% seems right to me.

This is exactly what I think. "Getting better" doesn't mean scoring more. With the current roster, he can even score less & still be better. Also, I hope he can spend a little more energy on D, without having to carry such a load on offense. He's a capable, willing & pretty good defender, but when he's asked to do so much on O, it's hard to expect big effort on D. I'm hoping to see some lock-down moments from him this season.... he's plenty capable, and would take pride in doing so IMO.

nop we dont need this, we need efficient ofens and thats it, i highly doubt that spida will grab higher numbers, except i hope %, when he will play next to Bojan and Conley, two much better shooters than he is. Hes shoot selection was a based on our poor offense, so if this would not change that would be truly out of sens

Is there a chance that we're all underrating Don because our last impression was his horrific playoff series?

From the start of 2019, Mitchell averaged 26.5/4.5/4.8 on 56% TS. That was the easier part of the schedule, but he was also clearly affected by his foot and lack of training during the summer.

If Donovan becomes a top 10-15 player this Jazz team will be savage.

If he becomes a top 10-15 player, I will jump on the "we are contenders" bandwagon.

I'm the most expertized bandwagoner here (just look to my avatar and banner).

I don't really care where is he ranked or what criterion they keep to rank him.
I'm into the third year is often as tough as second one bandwagon.

Guy is legit primal source for a star but let's be patient.

I don't foresee a major up or down in flashy numbers.
I think (or at least I wish) he'll grow better off the ball, specially at defense; doing consistently all of those little things that earns the noble title of solid player.

If he manages to get better with the ball, that will be a bonus but I won't be disappointed if he doesn't as long as he upgrades all of the rest.

Shouldn't we all be seeing better efficiency from Donovan on Team USA? What am I missing?
s he playing against better competition therefore it's not what is expected?
Is it too early?
Is he just getting his bearings under him?
Has he been amazing and the box score hasn't shown how efficient he has been?
Is it the international rules that are causing efficiency stumbles?
Is it that he has too much talent on this team or not enough?
