Thank God! Great job Rosas, a Timberwolves GM with a brain for once. Wish you the best Tyus in Memphis.

I don't see him as a top back-up. He is a severely limited player and MEM overpaid. Bon Voyage!

Watching Jeff Teague dribble the shot clock away while accomplishing absolutely nothing is painful to watch, so I had high hopes that the Wolves would do something to upgrade the PG position. Unfortunately it looks like we downgraded, while also reducing our depth and having nobody that is likely to be around after this season. I liked the talk coming out of Rosas (going after DLO and rumors of wanting Garland), I just really don't like the results.
I don't think this is a finished product yet, even if that PG group opens the season. I think they're looking down the road, not just at this season. Tyus fills a need this season, but I bet his contract would've gotten in the way in future seasons.
I think Jones contract will have neutral to slightly positive value after this season. I don't really see the Wolves doing much in free agency, so any significant improvement is likely to be through a trade and Jones contract could be a small asset or at worst salary filler in a deal. I just don't see the downside of matching him.

If we had signed him for 4 $25 million when we had the chance I would be in favor of it. Now that it's 3 $28 million that is simply too rich. Good luck Tyus.

Sure, but I'm fine that Rosas didn't want to compound Thibs' mistake by making his own

Absolutely, just an observation.

I don't see it the same way. I think the contract he got is the high end of his price range. I don't really see his contract being viewed as a bargain/positive value in a year, especially playing most of his minutes behind Morant.
And while you say we won't do much in FA because we're over the salary cap, every dollar added puts us one dollar closer to the luxury tax both this year and beyond. It would've limited our already-limited FA options that much more. Even as a possible trade piece for us during the season, I don't see it because of his price point for someone destined to be a backup.
Just wouldn't have been a very wise move. Only thing that really hurts right now is the #OneOfUs angle.

Another way to use cap space is to be a facilitator to acquire draft picks.

Max cap space can be useful to acquire trade targets too, either ones already on a max or ones ready to start a contract extension. I don't have a list of names in front of me, but it's what the Rockets did when acquiring James Harden.

the year/class doesnt matter
wolves won't have a more attractive FA situation then they did in 2017 with newly acquired prime Butler and KAT at the time as "#1 player GMs want to build"

true, but garbage usually comes attached with those picks
become capped out again for a pick in the late teens/20s

Re: NBA TV just broke some news: Tyus Jones agrees to contract with Memphis
Quick math....
The 2020-21 salary cap is projected at $118 million, last I saw. That would put the rookie extension max slot at $29,500,000. Which means the goal is to get our 2020 cap down from $99,540,316 to $88,500,000. That's actually pretty doable.

This move tells me Rosas is going to do everything he can to get out from some of those bad contracts this season.

We finally have a GM with balls for once...
Return to Minnesota Timberwolves
