Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

Re: Trade for Westbrook?
I stand on the fence. Either way I’m going to be happy. As long as he doesn’t go to the east. And considering he just liked a picture of him in a MIA uniform we are screwed. When MIA is torching our guards this year with Broody and Butler we will all look back and wish we had a player of his caliber! Rjax isn’t going to be able to stop them and poor Brown won’t know which one to guard.

Vince Ellis has reported that the Pistons internally are “lukewarm” to adding Westbrook. Sounds like we won’t be breaking the bank after all.
I bet if Donovan Mitchell was currently on the roster, there would be more of a willingness to "go for it".

If Olynyk is being dealt to OKC in a Westbrook to Miami deal, I'd try to reroute him here for Galloway and Maker.

Re: Trade for Westbrook?
If Westbrook goes to MIA we should trade Blake to a contender because I’ll feel real bad for that dude got stuck in DET with them not filling out a competitive roster around him. What was the point in getting a player of Blake’s caliber and contract to literally aim for the 8th seed so stupid!!!

Griffin should absolutely ask for a trade. Gores always promises to make the big move and pay the tax - passing on Westbrook will prove definitively that he's blowing hot air.

And I won't feel bad for a guy making 40 million dollars a year. For some reason I think he will be able to make do.
And SVG's point was a desperation play to try to save his job. Nobody in their right mind would try and acquire someone paid 40 million a year to only be marginally better... And yes, I know that some vocal posters on this board want to do that very thing.

I’m starting to wonder if the current FO looked into dealing Blake and Dre and simply didn’t get satisfactory offers.

Re: Trade for Westbrook?
We will be lucky to be 7th or 8th seed
Tor>DET
BOS> DET
PHI>DET
IND> DET
BKN> DET
MIA > DET
MIL> DET
Orl = DET
WAS = DET
ATL = DET
We are a Blake injury away from drafting at number 9 for the next 3 years.....

Re: Trade for Westbrook?
If I were Ed and it’s clear we can’t land a worth while deal for Westbrook or any super star why not offer up Griffin a chance to go home to play with Westbrook in OKC , shoot give em Dre too and really start a rebuild instead of this staying competitive just to say we are ok at basketball none sense.

I’ll feel bad for someone with Griffen’s skill level and competitiveness never being able to get a championship. Gotta remember that 40 mil looks a lot less after that child support coming out of it

Re: Trade for Westbrook?
Max contracts with veterans is really too high. They arent going to give the return on that cap amount.
Supermax? Portland is going to regret it. Imagine Charlotte giving Kemba that contract. John Wall even at 100% isnt worth it.
Blake is near his salary at least. But that was a historic year for Blake plus he played way more games than usual.

Re: Trade for Westbrook?
Miami signed Herro today - so he cannot be traded until August 10th now. Interesting.
I think they feel they have the best offer and didn't need to include Herro. And they can't include a FRP until 2025 as OKC already has their 2021 and 2023 FRP's. So their best offer is likely expiring Dragic, Justice Winslow and that 6 drafts away 2025 FRP.
We offer Expirings, Luke Kennard and a 2020 FRP and that is pretty comparable given the 6 year separation in pick years and more expirings and instant cap relief.

If they arent trading Herro or at least Bam the WTF are they even giving them? Feels like OKC is getting pretty screwed if they are just sending him there as a favor.

I know both are pretty "meh", but I would lean towards Meyers over Kelly.
Meyers is at least a Center, a year younger, bigger, and shot 45% from 3 (Kelly shot 35%.). I wouldn't hate getting Olynyk, but hopefully he would at least shave those pubes off his chin.

It really is tricky -
The Thunder ideally would like to take back salaries less than the $38.2 million that Westbrook will earn this coming season because OKC doesn’t want to increase its luxury tax payments. That’s a big deal for OKC, which is $2.25 million above the $132.6 million tax threshold and is subject to the punitive repeater tax if it stays over that threshold.
But because the Heat is hard capped at $138.9 million after the Jimmy Butler trade and won’t have space to sign any more players after eventually signing Tyler Herro, Miami cannot send out less money than it absorbs in a Westbrook trade. And the Heat needs to send out players earning at least a couple million dollars more than Westbrook’s $38.2 million if it’s a 3-for-1 trade.
Here’s why: Because the Heat likely will need to send OKC three players for Westbrook, Miami would be left with 12 players under contract if it’s a 3-for-1, instead of the 14 that will be under contract with the current roster after Herro signs.
Teams must have at least 13 players under contract by the first game of the regular season, meaning Miami would somehow need to find a way to trim additional salary to add a very cheap 13th player by mid-October. It would be OK, within league rules, for the Heat to have fewer than 13 players under contract before then.
https://www.miamiherald.com/sports/spt-columns-blogs/barry-jackson/article231883128.html
I'm not sure Miami can make it work. They need to send out Dragic, Winslow and then find a third team to take on Olynyk, Waiters or Johnson and send back less contract. Waiters, Olynyk and Johnson are all signed through NEXT season so dumping them will have a higher price as well. And as mentioned Miami cannot trade a FRP until 2025. Can't trade Meyers Leonard for 60 days.
