2019 NBA Draft 2.0 - I can be your Herro baby

Good to see Tyler Herro appreciation in here.
Two weeks ago, a lot of haters came out and even calling Pat Riley to step down because they dont like the pick.
Now what!?! ha ha ha

Summer League tends to do that. Which is why I like to remind everyone every year that Summer League is not NBA basketball.

We all know to take Summer League for what it is. Tim Duncan looked horrible in SL and finished fifth in MVP voting his rookie year. Trey Young also looked like trash last year.

But you can't pretend there isn't some correlation between rookie SL performance and future success, even if it's minor.

Gilgeous Alexander's play last year made me think he might have what it took to be a future star, and right now he looks to have the brightest future of the guys outside the top 5-6.

Basically, if Tyler was looking terrible, I'd be a little concerned, but I wouldn't be trashing him.

But when your 19 year old rookie is averaging 20, 3.5, 3.5, and 2 through the first 3 games, it is encouraging.

He's shooting ... 36.7% FG ... 36.7 3FG% ... 100% FT ... if the stats found online can be believed.

To me the things I see in Herro that excite me are not the shooting. It's the willingness to pass (and make crisp passes when he does). The attempt to get in on loose balls and rebounds and hustle plays.

I don't care that he is shooting a low %, he is getting to the right spots and putting himself in position.

From a pure basketball standpoint, yea we can probably pump the breaks.

But looking as a coach, which means I try to look at it as neutral as possible without my fandom, Herro has a TON of very very good traits and he definitely stands out anytime you watch us play.

They can be believed.

But this actually brings me to my personal crusade against the use of FG% at all. Herro's True Shooting % has actually been 55.3%, which was league average last year.

He hits a ton of 3's and does not miss FT's. So by definition, he is a player that FG% will never fairly represent in terms of depicting his scoring efficiency.

33.07 PER | 20/3/3/2 | 2.5 AST/TO | 55.3% TS | +79 (83.1 minutes played) | .508 WS/48

Those are dominant numbers. Even with the 36.7% FG, his TS is still at a decent 55.3%.

I really like Hurt. But I have some real big concerns of what he’ll be able to defend. More so than Herro. I’m also kinda intrigued to see Vernon Carey but not sure he fits down here. It’s all moot though cause we’ll be picking in the 20’s.

Fortunately they have a pick in this draft. Just took a quick glance and it looks pretty damn deep. Doesn’t seem to have a Consensus top player. But its deep. Also fortunately, Riley can’t trade it.

yeah am optimist about herro but i guess people wanted the heat to get bol bol as he seems to be a pretty dominant and versatile center but time will tell if the heat erred on that moving him to denver
