CP3 -- What Happens to Him?

I've been reading reports that the Thunder may keep CP3, but I strongly doubt they will.

In the event that he is waived, I assume he'd sign with a title contender although early reports also have him possibly heading to Detroit or Orlando.

Where does he end up?

My personal thinking is this:

Clippers -- I don't see him reuniting with Doc Rivers. He had issues with how Doc refused to deal Austin Rivers, Doc's son, so there may be some bad blood (although the presence of PG13 and Kawhi may change things).

Lakers -- A lot of reports have him possibly going to LA, and he would instantly be put into that starting PG role. He is good friends with LeBron, so I could see this happening -- until I realize that the Lakers also have Rondo. Lots of bad blood there, but maybe it's because these two guys are incredibly competitive? Do the Lakers, potentially, get rid of Rondo if it means landing CP3? Also, reports said that CP3 didn't like that he didn't get to lead the offense with Harden on the floor. I could imagine that he might possibly feel the same way with LeBron (although this may be alleviated b/c they are good friends).

Pistons -- Reports claim that Detroit would also be interested in potentially signing CP3. Personally, I don't see that happening because I don't think Chris Paul wants to play with a much older Blake Griffin again.

Orlando -- May make sense if CP3 is comfortable knowing that he won't ever win a championship, and his predominant role would be to develop talent and act as the vocal leader.

My own Dark Horse -- Philly Philly. I don't know what their cap situation is, but if they can sign CP3 to a vet minimum, perhaps they can move Ben Simmons to shooting guard?

If you mean OKC is going to eat his contract? Perhaps. They did just get rid of the behemoth contracts of PG13 and Westbrook, so I assume they can waive and stretch CP3 (can they actually?) so they pay smaller incremental payments over a longer period of time. More particularly, they can pay his $124M left on his contract over a 7-year period (double the time plus one), at a rate of about $17.73M/year.

So it's preferable to pay ~$40M every year for the next 3? That seems a lot less likely.

Another option would be to just trade CP3, but whoever the recipient team is would want some draft picks or studs in exchange for paying CP3.

He is gonna stay in the OKC, they have to rebuild anyway and CP3-Adams isnt going to screw that up. Maybe if Miami is stupid enough to take him off their hands for cheap.

I don’t think he stays in OKC, but I definitely don’t see him going to Detroit or back to LAC. Miami’s an option, and maybe Milwaukee also — or at least they’d be interesting anyway.

Depending on the team, there could be a need there and they would be sending back short term crap contracts.

Ex - Detroit has Reggie Jackson and Tony Snell making $30m between them. Charlotte has a wide ranging collection of overpaid crap like Nicholas Batum, Biyombo, Marvin Williams, Cody Zeller, etc.

And given the Thunder’s current trajectory, tanking for 3 years is more appealing than crippling their ability to rebuild in years 4-7.

He should turn that player option into a team option if he wants to land somewhere he wants. But thtas pretty unlikely

I wonder if there is any precedent with this new CBA of a player REALLY wanting to play for a contender, so asking his current team to waive him agreeing to pay back part of his contract (for example: CP3 signing a subcontract that says if OKC waives him, they will only be on the hook for 50% of what he is due)?

What uniform does CP3 end up wearing at the start of the season?
