How are people going to complain about today's NBA being soft and long for the glory days of the 1980s and then complain about this..

1. It’s summer league, the games don’t matter.

2. He isn’t playing hard, he is playing like an entitled jerk.

Because he is not fighting a guy man to man when the play ends. He is sticking out his foot when guys are going for a layup. He is trying to subtly hurt other players because he can't handle minimal levels of contact, which are commonplace in the game. It is childish.

Ding ding ding. When people say they want toughness back what they mean is they want people in the place Williams was in to be able to knock his damn head off and only catch a suspension.

The real travesty in all of this was not Grayson's antics. It was the fact that no one is talking about his actual performance on the court. Can't quantify how bad it was because it looks like Grayson Allen never played for the Grizzlies. That was all in our imaginations I suppose (his name does not appear on the boxscore). https://www.nba.com/games/20190711/BOSMEM#/boxscore

A player who is supposed to be the young gem of the Mike Conley trade (and a former 1st round pick) is dumpster fire in summer league.

Edit: Actually we can extrapolate that he scored 3 points because the total score adds up to 84, not 87. And he took a number of shots.

Should we give him the benefit of the doubt and say Allen is really that clumsy and slow on defensive - rather than a punk?

Coach K, please answer.

Coach K probably going to release a statement that Grayson never should’ve played summer league. Not mentally in game shape.

That's not all that people complain about. They also complain about the lack of hard fouls. How many times have we heard people nostalgically say "he'd get put on his a** in the 80s"? Those plays by Allen weren't even bad.

About every other game I saw last year had someone flying in for a layup and getting hit hard... on the top of the head on lame "attempts" to block shots. Those kind of hard fouls happen a hell of a lot more nowadaze than they happened in the 80's, and they're a lot more dangerous than the yawn-inducing shoving matches that went on in the 80's.

It's not that those plays weren't dangerous and the physicality wasn't greater, it is that the NBA has intentionally enhanced the pace of the game with handchecking/defensive 3 seconds and other such rules. When players are getting out in transition and most vulnerable, this is where disasters are more likely to happen. Our rules now are geared towards player safety in that respect. While getting hit more on every play takes its toll, getting hit when you are vulnerable flying to the basket is far more dangerous.

In this sense, the 60's were probably the most dangerous time of all.

There is a massive difference between being physical and attempting to injure other players.
