What happened to the amnesty clause?

Post#1 » by tonyreyes123 » Fri Jul 12, 2019 5:51 pm

With all this talk of Paul/Westbrook having untradable contracts I was wondering what happened to the amnesty clause?

I remember a few summers ago teams each having one and getting rid of a terrible contract and letting the player walk, I think it’d be perfect for today’s nba
Bucks tricked me into being a diehard in 2001, LeBron is the 2nd best player ever, and pizza is awesome.

It was a one time thing for players already under contract

I believe it was a one-time use situation for each team. Maybe owners can ask for another one-time amnesty after the next CBA.

not only is it long gone, it only applied to players under contract with a team at the time of that new cba

all these folks that got traded weren't eligible anyways

yeah, you had to be on that contract on that team when the new CBA was signed. We do have stretch provisions now, but you don't stretch a guy with 3 years 124m left on his contract, that means it would be stretched and you would pay 5 years 124m for a guy not on team (or is it 6, i thought it was 2 years after the contract ended.)

Amnesty clauses are usually one time things that happen in a new CBA negotiation.

The players still had to be paid. The amnesty only meant they didn't count against the cap anymore. I don't think CP3 would be amnestied just like he likely isn't going to be bought out.

It last applied to players already under contract in 2011.
