TWolves/Rockets/Thunder

Post#1 » by red96 » Tue Jul 16, 2019 11:38 pm

TWolves out: Gorgui Dieng, Robert Covington
TWolves in: HOU 2020 1st, HOU 2020 2nd, HOU Own or swap for PHL 2020 2nd,(cheap fillers and prospects) Isaiah Hartenstein, Chris Chiozza, Gary Clark, Michael Frazier, Shumpert S&T($10.7M 1st year guaranteed)

Rockets out: Chris Paul, 3 HOU 1st round picks, 2 HOU swap picks, 2 HOU 2nd round picks, Hartenstein, Chiozza, Clark, Frazier, Shumpert
Rockets in: Westbrook, Covington

Thunder out:Westbrook
Thunder in:Paul, 2 HOU 1st round picks, 2 HOU swap picks.

The Timberwolves dump a bad contract and save $11.1M, while adding 3 picks.

The Rockets sacrifice 5 picks, and go deep into the lux rax, but put together a really dangerous contender.

The Thunder just finish signing off on the Westbrook deal.

You gotta pay a lot more to get RoCo. A late first and fillers is not close

Adding 3 picks doesn't sound very good when 2 of them are late 2nds and another a late 1st.

What is the actual reason for Minnesota?
It is easy to say "Save money, get picks! Value-overload" but that isnt what is happening here. The Timberwolves aren't doing anything with the money saved, they aren't drafting anyone meaningful with a late 1st and 2 late seconds but they are giving away a key player on a great contract for a few more seasons.

I’m honestly not sure Covington makes up the value of Dieng’s negative contract. But I suppose an “all-in” Rockets team wouldn’t care.

I agree it's not enough but what if Rockets send another 1st, that gets packaged to a 3rd team with Dieng for something useful like Crowder? (cut OKC out now that the RW deal is official)

So they end up with a 1st, getting off Dieng and have a wing that can help them next season that they can let walk for a max guy or keep if they don't find a max guy in FA

So like
rockets get
Covington

Wolves get 2020 first, 2nds, Hartenstein, Crowder and Hill or Plumlee

Grizz get Shump S&T for like 8M, Dieng, 2022 1st with light protections

The trade makes absolutely no sense for Minnesota in terms of timing or value. Why would the Wolves use Covington to dump Dieng at this point in the off-season? The team would be much better off playing out the year and move Dieng next off-season if needed. As far as value, a late 1st and a couple of poor 2nds are nowhere close to making this even remotely attractive to the Wolves.
