I wonder if it has anything to do with Kanter wearing #11 ? Thinking Ainge did to send a message to Kyrie that we don’t need him which I absolutely love !

To be honest he took 5m to sign with us. He probably would have been a 9m a year player at mins, more if more teams had cap space. He's still young and has been a 20m a year guy for some time.

He is a major signing. I mean, Wallace was paid 5m and he got one, Shaq got one and he got vet min.

Just because you take less money to sign with a team you like, doesn't mean it's not a big addition. Kanter is a big addition. He's not prime Horford, but neither is Horford and he got 26m a year or something like that.

The C's message was that this pair is at least something of a reasonable facsimile replacement to the pair that they lost to FA.

This is my worry with Kanter being pushed into taking more threes. I'm not against him adding it to his arsenal. It especially makes sense if we want to run PnRs with him and Kemba and we don't want to clog that paint, try to draw the defending big away from the rim. But we also don't want Kanter to dull one of his strengths which is offensive rebounding.

Below is Brook Lopez's 3-pt attempt rate vs. FT rate vs. Offensive Rebounding rate over the last few years:



I also still recall our failed experiment with Sully chucking threes (I don't think he ever exceeded 30% from three). With Aron Baynes, it was kinda understandable to have him shoot those open threes since he wasn't particularly good as a rolling big and doesn't have much to offer scoring-wise around the rim. He also didn't have much of a post game to speak of.

Finding that balance is the key. I think in the rare instances they play another non-shooting big with Kanter like Williams or Poirier, him being able to shoot from the three is useful while the other big is the roll guy. Him being able to pop on high PnRs and dribble hand-offs at the top of the key would be good for Kemba and Hayward too in their drives to the rim.

I doubt anyone would have offered $9 million per year. He had a great little stretch with Portland, and maybe has figured out how to play.

The Knicks didn't bench him for his defense. They told him he wasn't in their future plans and the franchise needed to play their youth.

"We're fighting for a certain style of play to start building for our future," Fizdale told reporters. "I want to be able to play a very versatile style in the future and I don't want to wait to start working at that. And start building that out."

He went from riding the bench with the Knicks to helping Portland get to the WCF as the starting center. Don't try to compare the Knicks to any other franchise. Their dealings with Kanter are not alike.

There is potential for Kanter to have some Baynes-level "spacing" - ie, if he's trailing the play and wide-the-F-open, then sure, jack it up. His FT% hovers around 80% and he hits midrange jumpers at a not-horrid level, so why not see if he can hit 32-34% on low volume?

If we need to space we'll likely just have to play Theis and/or go super small with Grant at the 5.
