Shadow [Mandarin] (2019) - 6.5/10
Spoiler:
Shadow 2018 ★★★

Watched Jul 28, 2019
RedShoelace’s review published on Letterboxd:

Shadow is one of those good Chinese martial arts epics like Hero and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon with more beneath the surface. Right off the bat you notice how absolutely bleak in terms of colour scale the film is, many near black and white scenes, muted grays and constant rain. While not quite a black and white film, which you'll discover once the action begins and the blood starts flowing, it is one that handles its visuals and cinematography with purpose. As the opening title card would tell you; a shadow was employed by lords and nobles of the era to act as hidden surrogates in order to keep the master safe from political intrigue. Chao Deng is exactly that, a shadow of the high ranking military commander, trained since a young boy to live the life of another person. What I enjoyed about the movie was how the visual style was not used in a gimmicky manner which I find sometimes with modern films opting to go black and white. With Shadow, the lack of colours represents the duplicitous nature of many of the characters and more importantly the shadow himself.

To say this was on par with the action of Crouching Tiger or epic scale of Hero would be a slight exaggeration of the works of director Zhang Yimou. It is good nonetheless, the action sequences rife with effective and bloody slow motions are well executed and done so in an artistic fashion. Does it get corny when a one hundred man invasion squad starts rolling down the street on their metal sword umbrellas like it's a day at the water park - sure. That's what you typically get with these Chinese action films though and it's also truly part of the charm. The set designs take you back in time, the costume designs were well done and even the intentionally fake CGI landscapes are suitable. Shadow is one of those fun historical action films with political intrigue, backstabbing and some great cinematic merits. Is it perfect? Not by any stretch, but it's one worth watching whether you're a fan of the genre or not.

Hail Satan? (2019) - 5.5/10
Spoiler:
Hail Satan? 2019 ★★½

Watched Jul 29, 2019
RedShoelace’s review published on Letterboxd:

Hail Satan? is not exactly a ground breaking documentary but is successful in providing information to the ignorant, (like myself) and more importantly opening your eyes to into an interesting viewpoint. The story is narrated from the birth of The Satanic Temple's movement until its battle with Arkansas and the right to display a religious monument on government grounds. The object of dispute in this case is the monument of the Ten Commandments which they believe breaks the separation of church and state in the United States and therefore in the sake of religious pluralism wish to erect their statue of Baphomet. Nothing really stands out in Hail Satan from a documentary perspective, then again I am quite the harsh critic of the genre demanding more than an interesting subject and/or story. What IS interesting are the individuals who started up the movement; not satanism itself but, as the film will go on the explain, their code of ethics and morals that are not quite you would imagine when hearing the word satanists. Not much of a musical score or out of the box events occur, there are no major twists and turns. Hail Satan? features the traditional subject interviews and on sight filming of the events. You'll learn about something for sure and probably be surprised like I was how likable these band of misfits really are and what they ultimately stand for.

Boost [English/French] (2017) - 6.25/10
Spoiler:
Boost 2017 ★★★

Watched Jul 29, 2019
RedShoelace’s review published on Letterboxd:

A coming of age story about two friends who get in over their heads stealing cars. For a small independent Canadian film, Boost sure was well made and shot, including the two lead performances by youngsters Nabil Rajo & Jahmil French. Forgoing the formalist style, what makes the movie compelling was the way in which it was shot. Almost as if it were a docu-drama with the up close shots and often moving camera, this only added to the authentic characters and story. The car scenes were well done, and I got a real Gone In 60 Seconds vibe from it all. The time pressure of both stealing the cars and evading the henchman gave me some real nostalgia. (I suppose the car junkyard as the HQ helped)

There was more to Boost than just the car stealing and ensuing chases however. It was just as much a story about a divided immigrant family and the burdened role being the eldest son has. For young Hakeem that was very evident as the financial pressure on him made the decision into the life of crime an easier one. It didn't help that family friend Ramaz provided a gateway into the business itself. The external pressures of school, friendship, girls, money, and family all become too much and as a viewer you really feel tense on behalf of Hakeem and best friend Anthony. With a nice melodic electronic score, there is always a sense of pace pushing the film forward and even outside of the criminal activities the film never drags. Overall I enjoyed Boost, one of those independent films that on first glace feels low budget but hurdles over any of those hurdles which money can have. I got a feeling you've never watched Boost but if you're in the mood for an easy going thriller then this is a good watch.

Thanks for the links.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to see anything else - my festival is coming up in September, so I'm very busy right with planning.

Good luck with your festival this year Duckrice. I noticed you guys screened Karate Kid (one of the GOAT sports movies). Any chance you've seen the show Cobra Kai?

Too bad you're in London, if it was in Toronto I would definitely make an effort to attend. Only wasteman I know from the UK is GeordieRaptor but he doesn't post anymore.

Alita: Battle Angel (2019) - 7.0/10
Spoiler:
Alita: Battle Angel 2019 ★★★½

Watched Jul 30, 2019
RedShoelace’s review published on Letterboxd:

An imaginative and cool science fiction action film based on the manga of the same name. Going in to Alita I had already set my expectations low, the bizarre look to the stars half CGI half motion capture half human performance. There is just something off putting about her look and the world she inhabits in. After a while, a creeping acceptance started to settle in that reminded me it's okay for a science fiction film to be separate from our reality. With cyborgs running rampant, killer robot sentinels as a police force, a sky city looked upon as the utopia all those below wish to get to one day. Alita; both character and movie may look strange at first glance but once you get immersed into the world which director Robert Rodriguez succeeds in creating, it starts to become.... pretty cool.

The film opens with multiple time Oscar winner Christoph Waltz scavenging a scrap yard below the sky city. He stumbles upon the remnants of Alita, whose antimatter heart and human brain are still intact. There he creates born again Alita: Battle Angel with the spare parts of his deceased daughters cyborg parts. Sounds cheesy but once you learn about the hunter killer bounty hunters, deadly motorball sport that all citizens in the Iron Sky follow religiously, you start to fall in love with the world created. I admit, some of the CGI is pretty bad, and the worlds landscapes and extras are not exactly on the level of Blade Runner 2049 but the sci-fi concepts themselves are the real selling part. There is a lame love story between Alita and teenager Hugo who works as a sort of cyborg part black market retriever but all is forgiven because for all the bad that comes with Alita, there are equal parts good. Even Mahershala Ali has a part as one of the villains and looking back on his career is certainly going to be wincing at the performance he gave here (no fault of his own). There's some bad acting, cheesy dialogue, distracting special effects, but I can't emphasize enough the 'cool' factor being strong enough to sway me from worrying about that stuff too much. If you're like me who grew up on Star Trek and Outer Limits and countless other sci-fi futuristic shows and movies then Alita is going to be the movie for you, critics be damned.

Birds of Passage [Wayuu/Spanish] (2019) - 7.25/10
Spoiler:
Birds of Passage 2018 ★★★½

Watched Jul 30, 2019
RedShoelace’s review published on Letterboxd:

A terrific and yet haunting historical crime drama of an indigenous tribe entering the drug business, and their decline in tradition and culture over the years. A powerful story told in 5 chapters, that gives the bleak outlook of a once proud Wayuu people who lost their faith and values steadily being replaced by greed and blood. Main character Raphayet wishes to marry the tribe leaders daughter; according to tradition he needs to amass a dowry for her hand in marriage. Which sets him on a financial quest that leads him into discovering the demand for marijuana in the 1960's and 1970's. It doesn't take long before Birds Of Passage gave off an impression of City of God or Narco's. To see how a foreign people's loss in family values in order to supply North American drug demand was pretty heart breaking. The manner in which it occurs is what makes it such a powerful story, where as each passing year goes by one more compromise is made in order to earn more wealth.

Directors Ciro Guerra and Cristina Gallego did a hell of a job portraying this unique indigenous tribe in Colombia. From the costumes and attire, to the hovels and architecture. The little details which you pick up early on, change more and more over time. The tribe leaders matron Ursula and her beliefs in her people's tradition that goes back generations. I really liked this movie and it shows that these crime/drug films don't need huge shootouts *ahem Scarface* to be effective. To be fair, even calling it a crime film would be a disservice to the filmmakers intention. It's also a portrait of globalization and how much more difficult it has become for a people to stay away from the world and remain unchanged. The world came to the Wayuu and it felt like an inevitable force. Each generation grows further and further apart, from grandmother Ursula, to daughter Zaida married to Raphayet, and grandchildren. Birds Of Passage serves as an important national geographic style documentary with its information while also delivering the tension that the drug business is bound to bring.

Thanks bud.

I was halfway through Cobra Kai season 1, and then got sidetracked by having to watch a ton of submissions for this year. Plan to go back to it soon, but there's so much juicy TV content. I need to watch Warrior first, and then Wu Assassins comes out in a week. Aaargh!

Alita: Battle Angel (2019) - 7.0/10

Alita: Battle Angel 2019 ★★★½

7.0/10

I'm a huge fan of the source material, and I didn't like this movie at all. The only redeeming scenes were the motorball races, which shouldn't even have been in there. They made a mistake basing it on the anime instead of the manga.

It's apparently a concept jersey for our 25 anniversary. No idea if final product will look anything like it though...

If you guys saw the new NBA 2K20 trailer, there was no footage of the Raptors and only a 2 second clip of Kawhi dunking on them lmao the disrespect continues even after winning the title.

Miss Bala [Spanish] (2012) - 5.25/10
Spoiler:
Miss Bala 2011 ★★½

Watched Aug 01, 2019
RedShoelace’s review published on Letterboxd:

Laura and Azucena are two 20 year old best friend who finally have mustered the courage to enter into their state beauty pageant. Living out of Tijuana, their circumstances are pretty dim. Tijuana which borders the United States, and is a hotbed for all the drug trafficking that Mexico and its cartels have become known for. So it's of no surprise when after a day of successful auditions at the pageant that both Laura and Azucena end up in the crossfire of a deadly shootout. Laura, a witness to the whole affair becomes insistent on finding her friend ends up back in the hands of those who fired the weapons that night. Which sets the film and her into a whirlwind of chaos and mayhem. This is what director Gerardo Naranjo does well, limiting the information to the viewer to that of which Laura is privy to. Whatever happens before her eyes and ears is what we learn and the tension and anxiety that she's under really comes across the screen as well. In order to save her family, it's one dangerous thing after another. All the while the faux crown of Miss Bala is heading her way because like many things in Mexico - everything is for sale.

A crime drama that successfully portrays the dehumanization that the drug trafficking and criminals bring. There are shootouts, clandestine air plane rides, double crosses and coverups. Miss Bala is a movie about someone at the wrong place at the wrong time. It's also an eye opener to how ruthless, even in this fictional world, the cartels really are and their method of operation. All things that have been done before, and more successfully by other filmmakers but still, coming from a Mexico native brings an air of authenticity. With harrowing escape after another and Laura being used as a pawn representing the beauty queen title that was bought for her you start to question if there are parallels to be made for those contestants themselves. Who said being a beauty queen was easy anyways?
