If The Mavs Had To Cut Somebody Right Now, Who Would It Be?

I'm going with Broekhoff. Good story with him, but the team is going to keep Lee around so they can try to trade him for something, and the Mavs already have Curry as a better 3 point specialist. With Broekhoff only earning around the minimum, he's an easy choice in my mind.

Ideally he's just thrown into a trade for the heck of it though.

Agree, Broekoff, cheap and provides nothing to the team

I really don't want to keep Roby around. If AI is traded to Mavs, there's no need to cut anyone. I assume the Mavs have to send at least one player in such scenario. Now that Carter is gone, I think the Mavs end up doing nothing. Of course, if Dirk's coming back again, the Mavs should have no problem waiving one player. I understand fans are disappointed about lacking a significant move. And all best case scenarios are full of potential and hype. Things won't be clear until fans do watch the Mavs playing at all.

Broekhoff.

He’s just not an NBA level talent.

Barea is my 3rd favorite Mav of all time but he is my easy choice. I don’t get the Broek choice.....easily the 2nd best shooter and played well on both ends. For a team that plans to live by the 3pt shot, we don’t have many legit sharp shooters and Broek is the only legit one other than Curry.

I would cut Darren. Him doing GM stuff is one of the worst i've seen out of any team, including PHX and NYK.

Regarding players... hmm probably Barea if he becomes last season Dirk.

Well, with the team hard capped this year, cutting Barea would arguably be a bigger blow to the team than cutting Broekhoff. I understand that the costs are sunk, but I bet Cuban and Donnie would be facepalming real hard if they had to cut Barea.

Is Broekhoff a good defender? I honestly don't pay enough attention to individual efforts on that end of the floor.

Good 3 point shooter, sure, but so is Justin Jackson, and I think that with KP spacing the floor, a lot of other guys will get better at it too.

Barea is coming off of a tough injury, but he's been a strong bench player for the Mavs for a long long time. He's an underrated playmaker for sure.

But I don't think anybody's getting cut. I think the team will explore trading for a 15th member of the team using the TPE they have left, then trade that player with Lee after a few months.

Everything will depend on the types of moves made to improve the team that result from our cap relief assets being needed by other teams and also from assets that are let go by other teams.

The guy who is let go will be the odd man out because the additions we make will put him too far down the pecking order to see any meaningful minutes.

For instance if the Mavs add a PG then perhaps we would see Barea as not being a guy that is needed anymore.

I do not think we will add another PG since we already seem to like DeLon and Brunson and Luka is the main distributor to play with the ball in his hands anyway. Seth also has PG skills as does Reaves.

The greatest need is at center and we might take on Howard when he is let go. That would solidify our team and add rebounding which we desperately need.

At SF /SG we already have Luka, Seth, Jackson, DFS, THJ, Broekhoff, Reaves and Roby. DeLon and the other PG's can play some SG as well but even without them doing that we have 8 guys at these 2 positions. I cannot see us taking on any more of these guys unless a legit starter is able to be had and if that happens I bet someone is headed out in that deal anyway.

PF is not going to be a position we need to add talent to.

If Luka is considered a SF/SG/PG we have the flexibility to add BPA that we can snag. So whichever players we can add will dictate what position Luka will be playing.

As the primary ball handler he will still function as the PG but we still need a PG who can do things from the PG position especially on defense. DeLon is the best fit I think that we could have added if we could not get Green.

The Luka situation above and what we do to fill in around him is the play we make for these three positions
Center is a position of need and Howard looks to be the best fit there if we can obtain his services once he is let go.
PF is not needing anything more KP and Kleber are the guys we use there and maybe some Powell as well.

You can add Lee and Cleveland to that list.
God we are ridiculously too deep in those positions.

Of those 10 or 11 guys I'm really pulling for Reaves because he has the most upside (outside of Luka) and he would be a great fit with Luka. Imagine if Reaves pans out to at least legit starter material on a true contender and Wright is what we expect, Luka/Reaves/Wright/KP/Maxi with Brunson/Seth/Jackson/Roby/Powell coming off the bench could be a pretty solid and balanced roster in a few years.

I wouldn't say Broek is a good defender but he is definitely not a bad defender. He isn't your prototypical 3pt specialist that can do nothing else. He is actually a pretty active player on both ends if given the chance. He has decent footwork on the defensive end and seems to have nose for the ball.

However, I think the Mavs should take a good look at Reaves because he seems to have the tools to be a great fit next to Luka someday. He is a strong defender and a good ball handler and somewhat of a playmaker. He needs to become consistent as a shooter but I think the mechanics are there. His decision making could be in question as well but with Luka as the primary ball handler and head of our snake, Reaves' value will come more as a strong 3-D guy if he can become consistent with the shot. Definitely someone Rick should be patient with and provide a lengthy opportunity because he is probably the best and only candidate (imo) on this current roster to become a 3rd star.

I really hope Barea will be ready to start the season like they say he will.
