Was Antoine Walker really that good?

Post#1 » by cellphonecamera » Tue Aug 13, 2019 1:59 am

Looking at his stats, it seems like he was a chucker during his Celtics days, but wasn't afraid to shoot at all. How was he as a defender? And how did he decline that fast?

Walker is the perfect example of a player who was a product of that time.

One on one inefficient chucker, during a time when one on one play was a prominient part of the league. He also benefited from being part of the Celtics, a team starving for any resemblance of a star player and he happened to be that player for them for a long time, at least until Paul Peice came into his own.

He would not have survived in this generation of the NBA that's for sure, and would be nothing more than an irrational confidence chucker off the bench, so considering that, he did extremely well for himself with his limitations as a player, with the amount of money he made and the ring he got himself. That said, didn't he go broke?

To answer your question, no, he really wasn't that good.
Why so serious?

No he was quite overrated. He had the GOAT shimmy though.

Overrated braindead chucker

In his lone season with the Mavs he took 305 3s and shot 27%. That was more 3s than Steve Nash and Dirk took (257 and 290). Finley took barely more with 370. Of course they all shot much much better.

I celebrated to hard when they dumped his ass.

Speaks to how great paul peirce was to be able to succeed as much as they did with him as the clear 2nd best player.

He was out of the league by age 32 so...

He was skilled for a big man (offensively), but that was by early 00s standards. Wouldn't be a prominent player in today's league where almost every big men can shoot, far better than Walker.

He was undoubtedly a chucker, and his efficiency was extremely poor

However, he played in an era where that sort of play wasn’t as frowned upon. If he played today his skill set (offensively) would be a commodity. He was a pretty good 3pt shooter, could rebound, dribble and pass. Assuming he buys into the style of play today, that is

Oh it was frowned upon. Outside shooting was taboo in those days, unless it ran through the post first and kicked out to you without a defender in sight. That era put a premium on getting to the rim and he lacked the guard skills to do it. He was a less skilled version of Melo.

He was only good if he was a 3rd string scorer. If your first 2 weapons are off, he could provide a spark.
He was inconsistent as hell, could get hot but usually not.

He made some clutch plays at times, but the problem is he settle for stupid shots all the time

He was overrated. Then underrated. Now evenly rated.

The one year, he was an important piece of that Heat championship run. And he is the author of my favorite basketball quote of all time.

Very much a chucker and not a good defender. He was all hype; his teams payed and played him due to the hype. He would not make it as a starter in today's NBA and would be labeled a bust if he kept shooting like that.

I thought he was pretty terrible. I remember one season where he took 8 threes a game, which was 2 more than the next highest guy, and he shot 33%. I also remember when Charlotte was doing their expansion draft, Danny Ainge put Walker on the draft list, which surprisingly, wasn't picked up.

Career 3fg%

32.5% on 4.8 attempts per game
32.9% on 4.1 attempts per game

One of those is Antoine Walker, the other is Kobe Bryant.
