Which non-contender is the most likely to make a major win-now move?
Basically, the non-contender that is most likely to make a move to acquire a bona fide star.
What's your guess?
I would say the contenders are Clippers, Bucks, Lakers, Sixers, Warriors, Rockets, Nuggets and Jazz. So those teams are out of this discussion.

Pistons maybe? They've got a star in place with Blake and a lot of salary ballast to match contracts. They're kind of in no-man's-land right now as things stand.
Edit: After I re-read the teams listed, I'd say the Celtics. Veteran star PG, huge hole in the frontcourt, still have more assets than most teams.

Going by your list Portland would be a non contender. If they went all in and got players like Gallinari and Covington I think they could be a true contender to win it if healthy.

I Feel like Indiana will be a contender if Oladipo comes back strong.

Possibly, but hard to say. Oladipo isn’t likely back in 2019, so we’d have maybe less than a month to the deadline, we already owe a 1st due to the Brogdon deal, and it’s hard to see where we have the ability to make a move. In terms of trade value, it’s likely just Sabonis able to get back value for a big splash? Then, how doe we match salaries if it’s a bigger deal? Doug and Dom can only match salaries up to about $15m. Add in Warren, and we’re closer to matching salaries, but desperately would need a PF and also be weakened on the wing quite a bit too.
I could see us making a small SF for PF type deal involving either of Warren or McDermott to balance a bit, but if we move Dom, we definitely need someone back that can play a ton of PF minutes.

I'm going with the Kings.
The time is simply just right to complement the "young superteam" with a real star.

This is where I’m at too. To me, the team most likely to make a move for a bona fide star would:
1. Have made off-season moves that reflect a win-now approach
2. Have the assets to acquire a star, and still be a contender.
Orlando is another name I haven’t seen listed.

Utah Jazz or Portland. Maybe Spurs.

The spurs aren’t a team that has traditionally made big moves to bring in top players via trade. With the kawhi trade they had their hand forced and it was a massive downgrade.

Most likely? The Pistons.. not saying I agree that they should, but they could totally go after a Bradley Beal type

I think the Pels are very likely to not sit still. Brandon Ingram is due a lot of money as a restricted free agent after this season. I could see the Pels trying to package him to get a bigger/better fitting piece.

If Ingram isn't doing that well with three point shooting, then the spacing would be poor with Wiggins and Ingram together.

I would play him at the 4.

My guess is some team in the East that isnt Milwaukee will look to acquire Marc Gasol to better challenge Philly in the playoffs. This is assuming Masai looks to blow it up, which, admittedly, he may not want to do.

most likely because they are so close is Portland
also possible but unlikely to take them over the top by doing so are Orlando and OKC.
Sleeper here would be Miami

Tie: Orlando and Detroit. Both teams want to win a playoff round and see if they can get to ECF.

I have him as still too fragile to handle the physical demands at PF.

Out of curiosity, what makes the Jazz a contender but not the Blazers? Are we pretending last season's playoffs didn't happen? I seem to remember the Blazers beating Denver without Nurkic too.DeathLineup wrote:Basically, the non-contender that is most likely to make a move to acquire a bona fide star.
