Expectations for Hutchison and Val: Hutch injured p3

Post#1 » by transplant » Fri Aug 23, 2019 9:22 pm

It's pretty clear that Paxson hoped to trade Dunn for a veteran wing and it's becoming increasingly clear that he's not going to be able to pull this off. This means Chandler Hutchison and Denzell Valentine are going to be expected to be legit NBA wings, logging 15+mpg. I know that Valentine's physical situation is still iffy, but for this purpose, I want to assume he'll be ready to go. What will each be able to contribute per 36?

I watched a decent amount of Hutchison's college tape and was impressed. He's athletic, can defend, run the court and finish. The question then and now is shooting accuracy, particularly from distance.

Valentine is kind of Hutchison's inverse...not particularly athletic, but smart and can shoot the 3.

The presence of Young should help both of these players since they won't have to force their offense as much as they have in the past. I'll take 11-6-3 per 36 for Hutchison and 13-5-4 for Valentine.

Thoughts?

As someone who was very high on Hutch even was late 1st I am dissapointed in him. As someone who was very low on Valentine I am still very dissapointed in him. Because I knew he would rather be injured or unathletic enough to be good NBA player

I have zero expectations for Val. Not much more for Hutch. Hutch I think can be a decent 8th man but I don't see him exceeding that role this year or in his career frankly. I think he's got major issues to overcome including lack of offensive skill and motor. Defensively he can be an asset off the bench but he's a liability on offense until he either gets a shot or a better handle and is able to finish around the rim more efficiently.

I think the Bulls are going to use Dunn off ball quite a bit so he can be another wing in essence. They will need it because as I said I don't expect Val to play at all.

I expect Hutch to give quality minutes to the Bulls. Defensively, he’s a stud. He’s also a really solid rebounder and good at grabbing the board and pushing/running lanes. Offensively he has a decent skill set, but really struggled to put it together as a rook. If he’s given minutes with Lauri and Zach, he’ll do well in his role...though it’s a must that he finds confidence in the 3 ball. Off the bench, I think both Sato and White will be well suited for finding Hutch making back cuts and in transition.

I’m expecting Hutch to pleasantly surprise fans in year 2.

Denzel is a tougher call for me. He’s got really good vision, is an excellent shooter from range, and the last time fans saw him on the court, he was beginning to do well using footwork to get in the paint and hit floaters. I like his potential playing with Wendell or Gafford and playing alongside Coby and Young. If he can move his feet well enough to not be a negative on D, he’ll have a nice role. When he gets hot from deep, he’s deadly.

I’m higher on the wings than most, barring an Otto injury, and believe both Denzel and Hutch bring enough to potentially round out our SF spot really well.

I hope you're right but Hutch struggling to stand out in SL scares me. If he's going to be a solid rotation guy he should have been dominating out there and other than some flashes he didn't. Although his recovery from injury might have played into that.

My expectations for both is for them to be relatively healthy and produce in spurts. Anything more and it's gravy.

I’d liked to have seen more out of Hutch in SL, but given it was literally his first on court action after a long rehab, his struggles weren’t unexpected.

I’d actually almost expect both he and Carter to start the season struggling to find their way...but, even when struggling, both will supply plus defense.

You know I’m high on Hutch, not star player high, but really solid role player with a chance at becoming a decent role playing starter high....or maybe I’m just high ;). That said, he still must find a 3 ball and he needs to attack the rim more aggressively with consistency.

I disagree that they'll be counted on, really at all. If either earns PT, they'll get it, but I don't at all expect them to be handed it.

Ultimately, IMO, Young and Tomas can both defend the 3 spot, and maybe even Dunn, and Dunn, Tomas, Coby and probably Arci can defend the 2 spot (roughly as well as they could defend the 1 spot, and most likely all can defend it better than Valentine).

If we're talking predictions I am guessing that Hutchison plays about 10 minutes a game max as a defensive specialist at small forward and Valentine gets a bunch of dnps.

Hutchison=defensive specialist. Hopefully our version of Andre Roberson.

Here's how I see their chances of being an Allstar/Starter/Role Player/Bust at their peak:

Hutch (1%/40%/48%/1%) - Only difference between starter and role player is if he can get to a 35% 3pt shooter. I've seen enough of the rest of his game to see he has the physical ability and other skills to be a starting talent.

Val (1%/15%/34%/50%) - Val may never get back to being an NBA caliber player. He showed some compelling promise but missing the whole season may have set him back too far. Needs to show he has NBA athleticism and durability while regaining his game.

Just not sure if Hutchinson has enough offense to be anything more than a good man-to-man defender. Still, I'll take this. Wing defense has been a big problem prior to the Otto pickup, and you need options.

Valentine I just don't see him staying healthy.

Good cheap what-ifs on the end of the bench, but I wouldn't count them as integral pieces.

If Valentine is healthy, then I have no concerns about his ability to be a solid NBA reserve.

Those defensive highlight are awesome. I think he could be a great role player, he just needs to become more consistent on offense.

However, this season,my biggest hope for HUTCHISON is that people start spelling his name right.

Some thoughts on the bold parts...

- It's my understanding that the Bulls have 16 players under contract. I suspect that some type of deal will be made before the end on training camp, and most likely Dunn will be involved.

- Hutch is 1000% better in the open court. During Summer League I got the feeling that he'd been working on his 3P shooting, and it was coming along.

- Valentine probably won't see much PT until his physical status can be confirmed. If he is still with the team late in the season, he could be a factor with his 3P shooting and BB-IQ.

- More than Young, I think that Coby White will have a big effect on these two players. Most likely one them will be playing with Coby off the bench. Both are good passers and will be happy to have a player that can hit open shots and get them some Asts. This was already happening with Hutch and Coby during Summer League. Coby is also the perfect player to get out and run with them on the break, so we could see a lot of scoring off the bench.

Interesting responses. FWIW, I believe that if both Hutchison and Valentine are end of the bench guys, 33 wins is optimistic.

I kinda like both of them, at least as bench pieces. But, neither of them have put it together, yet. Zilch in terms of expectations, but I am moderately hopeful about their potential to contribute if a) Val gets healthy, and b) Hutch works out his shot.

thing with guys like val is you dont want them to spend time and years for him to develop. its waste of capspace and you hurting your wins record. you want to sign him for bench minimum in FA when he develops as useful to a team and your capspace. everythin else is waste of time with guys like Val specially taking them in draft at what end of lottery. so i couldnt care less about his ability or not "to be".

In no order:
White / Sato / Lavine / Otto / Lauri / Wendell / Thad

Adding in the scrub that is Dunn and the placeholder named Kornett, you are talking about your 8th through 11th men. Basically situational people who may not play in some games. The real issue is injuries. If you don't have injuries, these guys will have minimal impact on the season.

I do think that the Bulls will trade people for wings when teams decide they really don't have a chance.

As always with this team, it comes down to health.

Side note: I expect Hutch and Val to both suck AND blow.

Valentine is making a whopping $1M more than the minimum.
